kehfeh's Journal, 21 August 2014

I went out to eat with my girl friends the other night. We went to the greasiest spot in town. I wasn't too excited about the food, but the girls were and I went along. I stared at this chili covered hot dog and was in awe. It was huge! So I began picking at it and found it tasted pretty good. Not too far in, I was full. But because it tasted so good, I didn't want to stop. Halfway into the hotdog I became so full that I kind of wanted to puke it up. I don't like feeling that full, but I just love the taste of food so much that it's so hard for me to stop when my body says when. Is this normal? Is this where I just need to practice self discipline and control myself? This is not the only time, of course, that this has happened to me. Any thoughts?

Heck yeah me too....I made these fake almond joy treats using powdered cocoa, unsweetened coconut, almond butter, coconut oil and stevia. They are not too sweet tasting...but yesterday when I had one, well I am ashamed to say that I really tried to resist bu t I ended up having 3 of them.....ugggghh....I had a snack attack. The only good thing I can say is I didnt just ditch the diet and eat everything in the pantry as I have done sometimes in the past.

You're definitely not alone. But yes, that's where that nasty word "discipline" comes in; quit when you start to feel full. Either wrap the rest up for another meal another time, or tell yourself it was so good, you'll buy another one some day and move on. Then pat yourself on the back for a victory that day. Easier said than done, but if it was easy, I wouldn't have so many buddies on here. LOL!

You're definitely not alone. I find one of the most difficult things for me to distinguish between is whether I want food because I'm actually hungry, or just because it tastes good. I've decided on nights my husband makes his comfort food, I should use a smaller plate to help control my portions better, because the other piece I have to break myself of is this notion I have to clean my plate, something most of us were instilled with when growing up. The two things together make for that horrible feeling of being over full and not wanting to get up and be active.

Yes, there are certain types of food that trigger a sort of addictive reaction. There have been a lot of studies that have come out recently showing how animals react to certain combinations of salt, sugar, and fat. When combined they create a response that's like heroine in your brain. Once you bite in, it's kind of over. You will keep eating. There's a good book called mindless eating that talks about it - if you're into reading http://mindlesseating.org/

I agree with all the above, and there's so much to learn about all of this. If you're in a restaurant and they serve you something you know is too much, sometimes it helps if you cut it in half (or whatever you decide to eat) and put the rest aside to take home, or ask for a container and pack it up right away. I also find it helpful, if I'm satisfied and I know eating more would just be for flavor, to get a drink (hot ones are best) to finish off the meal. If I'm home, it would probably be an herbal tea with a sort of dessert flavor (Celestial Seasonings has some good ones). That hot liquid goes down and fills all the nooks & crannies to make you feel like you've eaten PLENTY, but since it's not food, it won't make you feel gross like overeating does. Last comment: you will find it much easier to tell when you are satisfied if you only eat when you're really hungry. If you're not hungry, the signals don't work right. This is the whole premise of the "Weigh Down" plan (and maybe others). If you're hungry when you start, food tastes fantastic, but at some point if you're actually thinking about it, you'll realize the food you're chewing is tasteless. That's when you stop.

You're not alone in this dilema. During the holidays I tend to be my own worst enemy. Whether you are at a restaurant, or at a friend's house, whenever you get to that point, it's time to get a to-go container. One of the things I've started doing, especially when I'm at a relative's house, is to bring my own to-go container; that way I get just one plate of food, put together a plate to go, and don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. Getting that to-go container at a restaurant, will enable you to put aside a tasty snack for the next day to enjoy all that deliciousness at another time. Word to the wise; get it to-go. :-)
