Just ran across an interesting idea in "The Men Who Made Us Thin." There is no such thing as starvation mode, but there is such a thing as starvation psychology where the body introduces lethargy and disinterest to stop you from doing so much. So much for your calorie deficit. Eating too little could simply be stopping you from remaining active and out of brain fog mode. I'll have to dig into that idea some more.

Diet Calendar Entry for 12 June 2014:
2394 kcal Fat: 100.89g | Prot: 177.56g | Carb: 190.25g.   Breakfast: Lettuce Salad with Assorted Vegetables, Hatfield Bacon, Egg, LeanFit Whey Protein Shake - Vanilla, Espresso Coffee, Unsalted Butter Stick. Lunch: Oranges, Sliced Ham (Regular, Approx. 11% Fat). Dinner: Breyers Chocolate Chip Ice Cream, Maple Syrup, Oatmeal/Whole Wheat Pancakes, British Columbia spartan apple, Lettuce Salad with Assorted Vegetables, Chicken Breast. Snacks/Other: Mayonnaise, Egg. more...

There is some excellent conversation about this on the bodybuilding.com forums. Search google for "bodybuilding The Metabolic Slowdown Thread" (no quotes).

This is definitely true if you are a carb burner. Most people don't stay away from carbs long enough to stay in starvation ketosis, and therefore don't get the energy back once your body starts burning fat for energy. Cardio exercise fed by fat is something lots of internet and books brag about, for anabolic exercise you will need some carbs however. If you look into ketosis, this same principle is discussed, and referred to as the keto flu.
