Has anyone read or know anything about "The Fat Switch"? I did a little reading earlier and found it fascinating. I haven't dug too deep into this yet. I hoped we could get a discussion going about it. Below is what I leanred from the one article I read. There is good science behind it.

Basically, they looked at bears trying to see how they packed on all that fat they need to hibernate in the winter. What they found out was surprising. They found that fructose (the sugar in fruits), when eaten, sends signals to the body to store fat. That’s how bears do it! They eat a bunch fructose with the high fat and protein so that it will be converted to fat rather than being used for immediate energy.

The article goes on to say that fruit in the whole form is not that bad if you are trying to lose weight because it very nutritious and contains fiber. But fructose is in a lot of stuff. Yep, fructose corn syrup, eat or drink that stuff and you are telling your body to prepare for hibernation and store as much fat as possible.

Another thing that comes from the article is about today’s modern fruit. It has been bred for hundreds of years to produce the juiciest and sweetest fruits possible. Today’s fruit is far different that the more fibrous and bitter natural fruits of the past.

If anyone wants to read the article search google for

Food for thought.... Knowledge is power!

This surprises me. I know that bears in Alaska eat a lot of blueberries because that's part of the territory there, and so the consume them from August until hibernation. But I read an article today about insulin resistance and it said that in order to REDUCE insulin resistance, a person should eat blueberries? So it seems to say the opposite of what this says

Thats the problem! There so much mixed information out there. Like I mentioned earlier though, I have not had time to dig deeper into this and find other articles supporting or bashing this finding. I plan to do that some tomorrow if time allows. Or my buddy NM on here will set us straight when he reads this. ;)

I have not researched this but I do know that fruit can effect your blood sugar. The normal diabetic diet allows some fruit but those of us who have diabetes know that many of us simply can't eat an apple when others can. It really depends on your own body. Maybe that is the cause for much of the conflicting information. I always take the 'average range or normal range' with a grain of salt. normal range is after all just an aggregated average. I tend to stick with strawberries in my shake so if I find I did not lose much weight this month, I may take them out and see if it causes a difference for my fat stores :) Thanks Brent!

That's interesting, makes sense to me. I know that sugars in general and simple carbs tend to make me gain weight.

No no no. haha. Fructose corn syrup is not berry based. It's corn based.... and it's High fructose corn syrup. Bears get fat not because there's fructose in berries. Let me explain it this way. Last year I spent three days waiting for a moose on the bottom end of the gene pool to wander by. (It didn't.) I watched the same bear eat berries in that same spot for 10 hours three days in a row. I'm sure he did it for another three weeks after I left. That's why they get fat. They'd get fat on salmon if they could get enough of it. I agree completely with avoiding high fructose corn syrup. Many "scientists" will one day be seen for the frauds they are and the disinformation they have spread in exchange for funding. Check out fructose dot org slash facts dot html.

This is a very common misunderstanding by the way. Someone's just trying to scam some $ from their new "understanding".
