mrsmole's Journal, 02 April 2014

I took a look at March, and in spite of being sick and having a few high calorie days, FS shows I averaged 1350 or so for the month, which is just above my RDI of 1300, and I lost 6 pounds.

Check out this math:

6 pounds X 3500 calories = 21,000 calories
21,000 calories divided by 31 days = 677 calories per day that I "lost".

When you consider that I was eating 1350 and you add the 677, you get 2027 per day. My Jawbone UP said I was burning between 1950-2000/day.

Pretty damned close, I'd say. And this is why I love math, and this is why I insist that calories in and calories out DOES WORK!

I chalk up being off by 27 calories the error rate of the Jawbone and/or any error I may have made "guessing" calories when I went out here and there, but it's still pretty amazing when you come right down to it.

Rob, I don't belong to any groups here on FS because I don't have the time to keep up with them and I don't like to do anything half-baked, but feel free to post it on my behalf and quote me as the source, if you like! I'll vouch for the results.

great post MM and I agree. I was only thinking yesterday what have I learnt from this work in progress so far in bullet points, and number 1 was calories in versus calories out is the only true way, number 2 was not all calories are created equal, number 3 was carbs and sugar are the enemies, 4 intermittent fasting is incredible...... etc etc. Pretty simple stuff I suppose, but then Ive always believed in the KISS principle - Keep It Simple Stupid.

I also firmly believe in the KISS principle as at my age hard sums I avoid. The nearest I get to hard Math is when I look at the number on the scales and try to work out if I lost or gained. Seriously Dom, well done and thanks for the information.

You got it! No matter what spin different people put on this dieting thing, it still works out to be calories in/calories out. All the other stuff people haggle about are just the things that influence their total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) and therefore their RDI. Good job!

Dieting is not for me at all. I have to use two diets as there just aint enough to eat in one. Seriously I have always said that we can eat any amount of any food and any type we wish it will never ever make you fat. What makes people fat is not moving their butts according to what they eat. If I was to have a McDonalds Super Mac with fry s every meal this would not make me put weight on IF....yer IF.....I ran the New York Marathon twice a day. However, I wont do that so back to my lettuce and crisp bread. I fully agree it is all down to input verses output but on FS we have experts and many of them all saying stuff about this chemical or that bone structure or some blood sugar or other along with other stuff I have no clue about. Now I am not a dietician in any way at all I just want to lose weight so I use the principle you quote here, calories in versus calories out and to be honest I am not doing too bad at all. I understand we can now purchase a set of scales which tell us if we are fat or not. I use a mirror and it can't even talk to me. Some people, in my opinion, take it all too far and far too seriously. Weight loss is simple - Move ya butt more !!!

Bwy39, you're so right. Part of the problem with being fat is that we're not full of boundless energy because we (and I'm speaking 100% for myself here, as in the royal we) sit around a lot doing a lot of typing on the internet because in my case it pays me a lot of money to do so. Sadly, going to the gym and running in circles like a freakin hamster doesn't pay sh#t and in faxt costs me money to do so. HAHAHA!. If only I could make money running my butt off. Ah, the good old days of waitressing and bartending!

Yep...calories in/calories out. And as for exercise, for me it's still a necessary eee-veal (say it with diabolical laughter). Totally agree that's hard for me to peddling around like a hamster on a wheel. I always said you'd never see me running unless you saw a vicious pitbull ten steps behind me! Doing my best everyday to change my mental mindset.

LOLOLOL! I love that line, "I have to use two diets as there just aint enough to eat in one."

Yup, I like math too, Dom. I averaged about the same as you and I think I lost a similar amount (or just a hair under). I like to keep things simple, too. Good job, and I'm glad it all "adds up!"

My March stats work out as well, it's so important to be honest and accurate with intake and output, and it's really nice to see that the math works !! Congratulations
