Did okay yesterday, even with a visit to Mom. The minute she realizes we're trying to diet, she starts offering high-cal foods. It drives me a little crazy. But I have to think of it as a game. I win if I keep saying no. We've been talking about Thanksgiving plans and how we'd use my house as a place for our multiple families to gather for desserts and coffee, and she said, now you can't do that if you're dieting. I know she doesn't mean to be spiteful, but it's like her reflex reaction is to shoot me down. She is a wonderful woman in so many ways, but I wish she could lighten up on the sabotaging thing. I need to work on reacting in a way that will train her to stop.

I liked reading your post. My mother is the same, only she adds in a sarcastic "YOU HATE ME" if I don't eat (of course she's kidding). She has, however, watched me gain and lose 40+ pounds about 4x in the last 15 years, watches me struggle to lose it then struggle with each pound I gain back. She says give up & buy cute clothes, but I'm not ready to quit. I'm really hating myself today, but reading your post made me feel ok for a minute, so thanks.

It's amazing how many "loved ones" find the need to sabotage. My DIL is the only one who seems to get it. Gluten free isn't a "weight loss fad" for me. It's a life or death issue. The weight loss was a lovely side effect. Now, if I want to lose the rest, I actually have to restrict calories and exercise . . . hence, a whole new barrage of sabotage. We're all in this together and together we'll beat it! Don't doubt it, my friend.

Hate the sabotage thing...as I sit here with mom's giant bowl of snicker's peanut butter, baby ruths, butterfingers, and reese's peanut butter cups on the table! :) Gotta love our moms!

Hey K, Jo and Steph -- thank you for the comments. That is interesting that diet sabotage is so common, especially by mothers. My daughter is thin, but we do like to feed her when she comes home... anything she wants. She lives far away, so we don't really have a problem with the food dynamic. Yep, gotta love our moms! And I'm hopeful that I'll be able to convince her that shoving food at me does not equal love.
