I cannot eat bread and expect to loose weight.
227.0 lb Lost so far: 0 lb.    Still to go: 87.0 lb.    Diet followed poorly.
gaining 3.0 lb a week

You can eat bread IF you can master portion control and moderation. If you are unable to do that AT THIS TIME, then yes, avoiding things like bread, white rice and pasta is probably prudent.
