Day 1

Sad news last night - I just found out that a family member of mine who also has a weight issue has just jumped the barrier from insulin pills to insulin injections. Unfortunately, no one seems to see anything wrong with this except for my husband and me. Just another wake up call for me, though. I am giving myself until March to get off the metaformin pills and back to a healthier me. I'll reach my goal weight sometime next summer. Swimsuits again? I hope so!

As far as the diet plan, the goal is set - 150 lbs. The only rule is to eat what I want as long as I keep my caloric intake under 1500 calories per day if I excercise and under 1200 calories per day if I don't. I plan on eating as much protein as possible since I know from Biology classes that protein is cellular fuel and very important in the diet. All types of fruit and vegetables are allowed, with fruit juices drank only in moderation. Breads, butter, sugar and creamy things are limited, but allowed in small portions. I am also going to try to keep my salt intake low as I tend to get puffy when I eat too much salt and I don't have low blood pressure issues.

The reason I am not really putting restrictions on what I can and can't eat is that I want and need this to be a lifestyle change. I cannot and will not say that I am never going to eat an ice cream sandwich again. But I am going to say that I won't eat them very often. Plus, I have had a weight problem for a long time and things are not going to change over night. I need to quit letting the food win! It's war this time!

Food Entry: For breakfast this morning, I have had a few bites of pineapple. Yummy! I will be eating a Special K 90 calorie bar for a snack, will be visiting Ruby Tuesday's salad bar for lunch (light ranch or italian dressings only, maybe a crouton or two) and will eat a small dinner of whatever my mother-in-law is making (it's usually not very healthy, so I don't eat much of it). If I can only stay away from the evening snacks, I'll be golden. No pop to drink, just tea and water. Maybe some milk if I can get some skim in the fridge.

Excercise Entry: I have class tonight until 9:30 pm, so I won't have time for a workout. But I worked out last night and am very sore today, so it might be a good idea to rest a bit.

Next Entry - Feelings about how my first day of the diet went and any issues I seem to have. Usually when I fall off the diet wagon, it's within the first week, so this week is crucial. Once I conquer this week, I'll be on my way to a thinner me!

People look at injectable insulin as a bad thing. The main reason for insulin is to lower your bloodsugar. By lowering the bloodsugar, the insulin protects the kidneys and heart. When diet, exercise and pills no longer work, injectable insulin is a god send. It stops the progression of a killer. I have experience as a open heart rn, and all of our patients where ones who could not control their diabetes. Sugar destroys their arteries thus causing heart attacks. Good luck with your diet and lifestyle change. And I hope this helps you understand insulin a little better. You would not beleive how many people think insulin is a bad thing. good luck

Thanks for the insight, jrs50. I understand that insulin is helpful and can keep people alive, believe me. But my main problem with the family member who is now on injections is that she does not attempt to control her diet, is not interested in living a healthier lifestyle, won't exercise and was actually giggling when she told me about her new shots she has to give herself. That sort of nonchalant attitude instead of a serious one is disturbing to me, especially when I am very close to this person and really want her to find a reason to live longer and healthier. Not to mention, I am a little afraid that I am heading down the same road and I feel that prevention is the best tactic. Thanks again for the info. I am in now way saying anything nasty about insulin and its life saving qualities - just that the situation my friend is in was completely preventable (she has Type II, btw).
