Elliptical machines aren't the most accurate measurement of caloric activity - the best way I can measure performance is to set a target goal for that particular machine, being 500 calories burned, and see how quickly I can get those 500 calories. A little gain each day is good. Today, hit 500 calories in under 37 minutes. Goal, I think, is to someday hit 500 calories in 25 - 30 minutes. See how long that takes.

I think that's the best use of the "calories burned" thingie! Seems so inacurate as a calorie measurement tool, but a good indicator of your progress used that way. So good to see you back on track!

I've actually found a treadmill that seems to have pegged my calories burned with my distance (which is what I've heard from every expert) - regardless of how fast (slow I mean..) I go :) As for elliptical, and for treadmills alike, I pay more attention to my time and effort level on them than what it says I've burned for cals. I tend to think ellipticals are way too generous and don't want to start rewarding myself with food for cals I haven't actually burned.

Well, Steph, not sure I am understanding what you mean by having your calories burned pegged. I mean, I can clearly alter how quickly I get to a certain "calories burned" number by either working harder, going on the highest setting longer, etc. Use to be I would get 500 calories around 45 minutes ... now less than 37 minutes. For the most part I am on level 20 the entire time, dipping down to level 9 for a spell, then back up ... once I get to level 20, burning 20 cals per minute, I will have pegged it ... but by those calcs, I would be doing it in 25 minutes, depending on what I enter for how much I weigh that day. So, I suppose by that time, 500 cals burned in 25 minutes, I should be pretty satisfied in performance. And, I should consider that progress from 37 minutes. Mostly aerobic progress, but also strength and stamina.

i should add, I can be on level 20 but only pushing around 15 cals/minute ... room for improvement. and I am only on level 20 for 25 minutes of the total 37, another area for improvement in time/effort. in the end, these machines are inaccurate, for sure, but finding some way to measure your activity is what counts for me.

That's true and fair :) Interesting number choice 37 - that's how long I was on the elliptical last night. Numbers that end in 5 and 0 are boring to me!
