Science Says: Walk This Way
Ladies and gentlemen, start your self-trackers: The holy grail of 10,000 steps per day for greater longevity turns out to be a myth. A study in JAMA Internal Medicine of 16,741 older accelerometer-wearing women suggests that there’s nothing magic about that number. In the study, women who walked 4,400 steps a day were slightly less likely to die in the following years than those who took just 2,700; the more the better, although there seemed to be little benefit above 7,500 steps per day. So where did that nice round number come from, anyhow? Probably the marketing department of a Japanese pedometer company from the 1960s—their gizmo was dubbed the “10,000-steps meter.” [Research paper]

They wasted money to perform a study to say that?

There are so many myths surrounding health and nutrition. They die slowly but it doesn't help when people keep them alive by spreading it on forums such as this. You must have a low fat/carb diet, you must eat 6 meals a day, you have to fast now, you shouldn't eat after 6pm, fasted cardio is better, etc. Spiking your insulin causes fat gain, hormones cause fat gain etc. 10k steps is the least of our worries.

I discovered the same information about the 10,000 step Japanese pedometer several years ago. Yes, 10,000 steps has passed into a must do now. That eight 8 ounce glasses of water are needed everyday has a similar provenance.

How many servings of fruits and vegetables do we need again? I get the fruit, the vegetables, not so much.

Walking, no mater how many steps is a good idea and certainly not a wasted effort. The more you move the more you keep your engine running at its best. I remember when pedometers came out. Everyone had one. It was fun to see how many steps we walked in a day then see it in miles. I remember that for me (an ER nurse at the time) I walked at least 5 miles a day.. I would lose between a 1/4 and a 1/2 a pound a day— probably mostly from dehydration and insufficient food. But, it was fun to see everyone’s numbers.

And did you know that the Santa Clause that we all know and love in his red suit and white beard was a product of a Coke-Cola advertisement. Get it? Red, White =Coke. True.

Great post, you have convinced me that I now have more time to sit around doing nothing.

Yeah, maybe it's for people that think they failed when they didn't reach this magical step count not for people to sit around doing nothing. Maybe.

Thanks, Kenna. For those of us with mobility issues, 10,000 steps is not happening. Weights, yoga, and swimming are my jam! 💚
