I got home from the North Country Fair around supper time last night.

Food wise things were not what I have been doing! I was not drinking the copious amounts of water that I am used to as quite frankly I am not fond of outhouses and not fond of getting up in the middle of the night to traipse through the cold damp early morning to use an outhouse. I definitely was dehydrated! I also, as a member of the organizing group, had free meals buffet style from Wed to Sun. Generally the food was good and my choices were good except around the baked goods. The bakers made the most amazing homemade goodies. That is my Achilles heel. I can walk by store bought sweets no problem but the homemade ones not so much. I definitely indulged in that area. When I stopped for some groceries on the way home I could tell I really missed eating the way I have been for the past 10 months or so. Today it is back to the old patterns. I plan to officially weigh in next Saturday. I will pay the 'homemade goody' piper then!

The Fair itself was wonderful. I had a couple of goals going in. My very close friend, Pat, who lost her husband a couple of months before mine died was in charge of all the meals for the performers and core coordinators. Approximately 600 people per meal. I feared she would become overwhelmed and shut down. I wanted to support her. I wanted to make sure that the volunteer piece my family is responsible for (Fair merchandise booth) was successful. I wanted to support my children and myself as we dealt with our well meaning Fair family.

All of these goals were met. I worked in the kitchen with Pat each morning from 6-9am. I know I made a difference in helping her stay steady. That was good. My son found himself needing to support his good buddy, Pat's son, for 3 days before he was back on his feet. I was proud of my son for being able to do so. Our merchandise booth was a great success and when I left for home it was nearly sold out. My children and myself were supported kindly but not over the top by our Fair Family.

The Fair honoured my husband in a number of ways. His photograph hung in the communal kitchen with the other two men we lost early this year. A painting of my husband and Pat's was displayed in the eating area. The painting was unique and celebrated their friendship. The program had a piece in it acknowledging his passing (as well as the other two men). There was an amazing Blues workshop in Dave's name called 'Dave's not Here'. They had my whole family come on stage and I spoke about 5 sentences to kick the workshop off and then we danced. I looked around and saw many people with tears streaming down their faces and smiling at me as I danced with long time friends. Finally, one of the bands gave me their newest album that they had dedicated to my husband's memory. Dave would have been proud.
