atriel2's Journal, 24 December 2012

Almost past Christmas. Our little family did our Christmas at home yesterday, I did pretty good. I went over on my calories but not over on my carbs or sodium.

Today we go to my FMiL's house in Oklahoma and that's where the challenge will be. I'm bringing my own food (she's not happy about that), but I don't really care. The real challenge will be on Christmas day when we go to my FSiL's house for her and her husband's Christmas dinner. I'm going to stick with Turkey and any non-carby vegetables I can find.

I have my bag of home made beef jerky, sugar free candy, low carb chili and left over roast beef, along with some veggies and cheese. I will get through this holiday with out falling off of the diet wagon.
I am completely unwilling to spend another holiday bloated, aching and unhappy.

It's kind of funny how crappy people get when you say, "I'm gluten intolerant, I can't eat that." And then I catch myself apologizing for being gluten intolerant, which is absolutely ridiculous. If I had asthma or a peanut allergy or a heart disorder, I wouldn't apologize. Why on earth do I feel like an apology is necessary? I don't know and I'll be sure to contemplate that moving into the future.

Anyway, I'm grateful to everyone here for the support. I'll be away until Wednesday but I'll check in a very little bit during the next three days.

Much love and happy holidays to all of you!

Toni.. I commend you on how strong you are with this holiday festivities going on.. Not only are you sticking to your diet/plan/goal you are going further in taking foods with you to the events.. Im going to try my hardest to stick to the plan for Christmas day.. I agree with you that others shouldn't be offended because of something you are trying to achieve and this is what is going to help you.. Don't allow your In Laws make you feel guilty for your health choices (bringing your food).. Have a wonderful Christmas and will be hearing from you soon!

Toni you are awesome and inspire me! I hope that the holidays went well for you. You are right we do feel guilty to say "I cannot eat that" when really we shouldn't be. I wouldn't want someone to eat something that is going to make them sick just to make me feel happy. However, as much as we expect people to perceive and interpret things the way we do...they don't. I hope it went better than you expected and look forward to hearing from you.

I hear ya. I'm always stunned by people who want to argue with me like I'm a child refusing to eat my veggies or try something new. Why is it 'No means No' can't apply to food? Just saying 'No thank you, I'm trying to lose weight' prompts 'oh.. come on... you can have a little bit... live it up!'. Saying 'No, thank you, I'm having to restrict my carbs & sugar because of diabetes' prompts "Eh, this one won't hurt you, just take a pill and live a little!' Crazy isn't it! It's not enough that we have to survive our own eating issues, we have to survive everyone elses. Good for you for taking care of YOU.

Everyone was mostly supportive. I did pretty well, too. I didn't count carbs or calories but I also didn't binge at all. I did have a couple of mishaps though. My FSiL brined her turkey with some brown sugar - I didn't know that until after I ate it. And the green bean casserole caused a wheat reaction. Literally 30 minutes after eating it, I started swelling. It just didn't even occur to me that it might have wheat in it. ~sigh~ I'm going to put off my weigh in until the challenge starts because my sodium was high over the last three days.
