Venting

My mother in law is a wonderful woman. She really, really is but when it comes to dieting she's not really that understanding. Don't get me wrong. She understands about dieting. She's perpetually been on a diet for the last 30 years. When it comes to low carb dieting, she is less than understanding. She keeps telling me that it doesn't work. That she did Atkins years ago and didn't lose any weight. That it isn't healthy. That I should do weight watchers, etc. etc. etc.

Except.
I have seen the way that she diets so I know exactly why she doesn't lose weight. Even on weight watchers she doesn't lose weight.

I'm gluten intolerant so my nutritionist recommended low carb for me to both lose weight and tackle my gluten issues. It's working. I've dropped 16 pounds in a month and a half. (Maybe more. My scale battery is out and I just realized that might be why I'm not getting accurate readings.)

We are hosting my fiancee's entire family for Thanksgiving. I'm happy to do it, I've planned my fasting around it. I'm good.

I just got off of the phone with her after listening to a long lecture about how it's "just portion control" and "if you eat good, healthy food you won't be overweight". I DO eat good, healthy food. We rarely eat out and by rarely, I mean I can count on one hand the number of times we've done it over the last two years. I make everything from scratch. I believe very much in "garbage in, garbage out".

I don't disagree that it is about portion control, but seriously, lady, you are driving me eff'n crazy.

She's bringing fudge and chex mix for snacks for everyone for Thanksgiving. Awesome. I specifically asked for low carb, healthy options. After all, I'm making the entire Thanksgiving dinner. She will be hurt if I don't eat a piece of the fudge and some of the chex mix. I will be angry if I feel like I'm being emotionally manipulated into doing something that I straight up don't want to do because it isn't good for me.

In-laws are difficult.

Oh Lord, do I know people like that! So frustrating. My mother has an old high school friend who is like that. Everytime she comes to visit, she's "lost 20 pounds". No idea where, unless maybe she cleaned out her purse lol. And of course, everyone else is "doing it wrong". Ugh. So sorry you have to be in this predicament :/ Another reason I'm so glad I don't have in-laws.. lol. I would suggest that you stand your ground, but then again, I don't have to live with the repercussions :/

My mother in law drives me crazy about dieting. Shes willing to try any diet. She stayed with us for 2 months one time because her and her husband were having problems and she had no idea why she didnt lose weight when I was losing on a daily basis and we were eating the same meals. Her problem was she never stopped eating. She could clean out our veggie drawer in one day by constantly snacking. The woman never ever stopped eating and when I pointed it out, she would say she didnt eat all day. lol. She drove me crazy. Even binging on healthy choices all day will disrupt weight loss. My mother in law gets on my nerves and she is far from wonderful so its easier to not mind so much about hurting her feelings. Is pretending an option, could you have a napkin and get a piece of fudge and secretly hide it in the napkin? Or maybe walk into the bathroom and toss it in the trash? I know it sound wasteful, but if you try it... it may lead to worse than one bit of fudge. LOL@ Angie about the your mothers friend. My step dad is always losing weight but always looks like hes pregnant with triplets. Toni, good luck dealing with the situation and as you already know, you are doing whats best for you!

Thanks guys. I just needed to vent. I've decided that I'm just going to politely but firmly explain that I really can't have the fudge or chex mix. @Christie: I get it. My MiL stayed with us for a week during a visit. She lost 7lbs in 3 days. She was so happy about that that she started going to the gas station to get iced cappuccinos and she kept telling me that they were only 8 WW points. They are - if you only have 8 ounces. She was getting 24 ounces at a time, several times a day. Surprise, surprise! She put all of that weight back on in 2 days. And then had the nerve to say, "Your stupid diet doesn't work". She also thinks that strawberries have no calories and that you don't have to count coffee (or the cream and sugar in it). Drove. Me. Nuts. Super frustrating. Thank you both so much for the words of encouragement. It really, helps.
