izzypup68's Journal, 13 August 2017

I finally set foot on the scale this morning for the first time in almost a month. Not good, but not too bad. I feel like I am doing the right things this week and I just need to continue and I will turn this around.

We had dinner out last night. It seems like I didn't eat that much. I stayed away from the bread basket (although my son was trying his hardest to tempt me!). I ordered the dish that included kale. :) No dessert, even for sharing. I was still surprised how quickly those numbers add up. I was reminded that restaurant meals are always more than I expect.

This morning, we are heading to the coast for a family hike. My hubby picked out a loop over 6 miles. I am a little worried that the kids are going to revolt 'round about mile 3! I am going to pack a lot of snacks and water. The hike should be beautiful, with redwoods and ocean views.

You're doing what you can to live it as a family! One day at a time and taking the snacks and water with you is the right way! Just remember the first aid kit and extra water too! (I'm a mom, what can I say? 🤷🏻‍♀️) 🙋🏻

Sounds like fun! Also, you need to take into consideration that restaurants use extra salt to get people to buy drinks. You could be retaining water. :-)

One of my "tricks" at restaurants is to either split my meal flat out with someone. Or to ask for a togo container IMMEDIATELY. 💁🏻Then I decide what I chose to eat and what I don't and the things I don't go into the togo container. 🙅🏻The others at the table may eat, my son at home may get lucky, I may get another meal, or it may end up in the garbage can. Better than the unhealthy habit of ME being the garbage can! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Good for you and hubbie for getting out there and going for a hike. The kids will appreciate it one day!

Our hike was great! The first two miles were climbing up to the top of the ridge and even I got weary of that, but the following 4+ miles were mostly gentle downhill in the shade. Almost no complaints from the younger set, which is a minor miracle! No need for the first aid kit. (I have one in my hiking backpack that is still shrink wrapped in the original plastic. I think life is pretty good that I have not had need of it in the two years I have been carrying it. I supposed I might have to start thinking about the age of some of items...) We did see a woman who was down. Her husband was on the ground next to her, talking to her, telling her she would be okay. They did not want any help from us. We were a little startled when a giant ambulance came around the bend on the logging road! We were able to direct them. Hopefully she was okay.

Those restaurant meals can add up quick, but staying clear of the bread is a victory and helped you save on calories. The hike sounds great! We don't have many places around here to hike, not that sound as nice as your area anyway. My kids would definitely complain, so I'm glad you guys had a nice time, with the exception of the couple with the medical issue. Doing those healthy things should help you stay on track and feel great!

Izzypup, you make an old scout mom proud! You were obviously taught hiking basics! 🙆🏻lol tell me you had your hats, sunscreen on, layers, water bottles and the leather man or Swiss army knife? LOL 🙋🏻

Helpful hint: If the kids are revolting around 3 miles or more or less. Break pieces off the snacks and throw them ahead of you to keep the kids moving. Gets them more engaged as the snack piece might bounce off the trail and they will have to search for them. Just joking. I did have to use this tactic, but not on my kids or grandkids.

Glad your kids enjoyed as well as the adults. It's often things like that that they will remember as adults. LOL the snack thing would work to get my dogs to do anything, grandkids Nope.

@Horseshu1 LMAO! I could see dangling treats at the end of a fly fishing line and casting it farther out...that might be kinda fun...kinda like you do when you play with a cat...LOL
