a new development - i have osteoarthritis in my left knee, which is causing my cartlidge loss. He said i cant do squats, lunges. and i "may want to reconsider my employment choice." his words, not mine.
He put me on a restrictive diet: 1400-1600 calories(i eat 2200-2500)
70% of diet needs to be veggies. blueberry, raspberries, and apple for fruit. lean meats, and said nothing about carbs. The only exercise he said i can do is riding a bike (which i dont own) and swimming (im out in the country....theres no pool in Sept!!)
Any one experience osteoarthritis? What are your thoughts on this advice??

As for work, my background check is back and im FINALLY no longer on volunteer status and on payroll.
my fiancee's car needs a new starter/alternator (im unsure which one). so, i dont have a car but the bus takes us home so its ok.
182.8 lb Lost so far: 34.2 lb.    Still to go: 0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.
steady weight

Sorry to hear about your knee, but glad you finally got a diagnosis. Regarding the new diet: plants are carbs. So he did instruct you. Veggies and berries and fibrous apples. My mom has osteoarthritis, but she just powers through it as far as I know. Her big hobby is gardening, which involves a lot of kneeling to weed. She's been using knee pads since she was 39 and gets acupuncture monthly.

Muscle development will help with osteoarthritis big time actually. But the trick is to build your leg muscles without stressing your joints. Biking like you said is a good one. I think leg extensions will be another. Once you build strong enough leg muscles they will alleviate pressure off of your joints. Giving them time to recover

I think your provider is being too restrictive about exercise. I live with both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and am a nurse in my 40’s. My doctor would have been fired if he told me not to nurse due to arthritis. I admit that I don’t do lunges anymore as it isn’t worth the knee pain. However, I continue to do squats but with a smaller range of motion. Think older person shallow squats. You can do a lot of exercises from a chair such as leg extensions or if you can get in the floor a variety of exercises such as leg raises, bridges, and clamshells. Also I would see if you can see a physical therapist who can teach you the best exercises. Even one session for education should be very helpful.

Ask for a referral to a PT, if you can. They are your best source for exercise recommendations. Is this your family doctor/G.P., or a specialist?

I've been dealing with crap knees for decades. I'd see if you can get PT with someone who can help you adjust to what you can do. women have weaker knees than men for whatever reason, but you can rehab and strengthen them with the right exercises. superman is right with biking and leg extensions. if you can't get PT, there are lots of PT YouTube videos. Bob & Brad channel is a good start.

I don’t know if this will work for you but my arthritis disappeared when I removed gluten from my diet. A few trials of adding it back it brought it right back. I don’t have issues with the other carbs, just wheat. It hides in tricky places like soy sauces, salad dressing, imitation crab. It might be worth looking into food sensitivities. I also have found yoga helpful. I have gone from daily pain to no pain. Removing gluten yielded results in less than a week. Of course weight loss has been very helpful as well. I hope you find what works for you. All bodies are different and what works for me may not work for you.

I had osteoarthritis ten years ago due to weighing double my normal weight. I lost all the extra weight, I do countless leg extensions, walk a lot and inject three hyalarts on each knee every year. No more osteoarthritis. MRI perfectly clean.

You can ask on FB and search Craig’s list for a free bike. Or even a free stationary bike. Many people just want to be freed from it. Good luck

Thank you everyone! Your advice has been put into practice. I will begin PT sometime this week/next week.. i began a slew of vitamins for joint/inflammation. (My dad has rheumatoid and sent the vits) I was depressed for a lil bit; since the specialist was very disheartening. Im getting a second opinion, general practitioner is sending me to someone else. On top of this, ill see a dietitian in regards to food allergies/aide with weight loss. Since ive had a history of disordered eating i need guidance on healthy weight loss and WHAT to eat for it.
