** MEAL-TIMING MUSINGS **

We don't gain weight overnight as we sleep. If you were to weigh yourself right before bed, the next time you wake, you should weigh the same or less, right? Here on Earth, mass requires substance and if you don't take in any further substance, mass cannot increase. Period.

That said, would it not make sense to eat most of your calories in the morning/early afternoon? Not only to give you energy to power through the day, but it gives you the day to burn the heft of your caloric load.

Taper the calories as the day draws to a close and end the day with a small dinner/snack at bedtime. I'm not advocating for the "stop eating at 7pm" nonsense crowd. Although, that would fit this theory, but not necessary for the same outcome.

Just discipline your body/mind to take in a majority of the calories early in the day while you're actively using them and eat just enough at night to prevent you from being hungry before bed. This will repeat the cycle by leaving you waking up hungrier in the morning too.

Does this sound farfetched or does it resonate with anyone else? 🤔

There is an old saying: Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.

Makes sense to me. I eat most of my food by early afternoon and often have nothing after 3pm other than a cup of tea or something.

conundrum… when to eat not eat how much or little to eat. That is the question many have yet to figure out.

I call eating a lot right before bed the "sumo wrestler diet". That's what they do when they want to put on weight. It works.....sadly. 😢

Yup, this is actually just how our bodies work. Though, I personally eat a little before bed cause I get very grouchy if I wake up hungry. Grew up in a household where I didn't get enough food. So now I just drink half of a meal replacement drink or eat a protein bar before bed. I think eating before bed isn't that awful as long as you eat something light. I pretty much just replaced junk food with soylent or protein bar and it worked for me.

Agree, I lose at least 3lbs during my sleep 😴, but of course, I usually gain about the same during the day.

im working on this right now. my nighttime eating has gotten out of control.

Seems logical - but then... I dunno. Seems like X cal minus Y energy would be the same... period. YES, if I am more active during the day & consider food my fuel, yeah, that would balance better.

If I ONLY eat once a day, and it's later in the evening period ... then does it matter? Won't I use that energy the next day to process the food consumed the night before?

And .. what is our safe word here? I forgot our safe word. But I am asking this with seriousness - I'm not mocking you or your logic.

I do as well. I do NOT sleep well if I go to bed hungry.

I get it. No argument. I don't think it would be comfortable to eat a really large meal too close to bed, period, regardless of weight loss or gain goals.

I think (or feel) digesting food puts a strain on our bodies - hence the theory that some foods are almost considered negative calories because of the energy used to digest them (raw vegs come to mind).

When I was trying to get my blood sugar under control I had to break myself of the habit of a PBJ & Milk before bed. So there is probably something scientific to the blood sugar, digestion, food processing, etc., that connects to the weight loss in a scientific way but I AM NOT the person to cite those references.

I'm just here discussing theories with you until the craving to look up home made biscuit recipes passes.

Seems like it makes sense but muscle protein synthesis should be stimulated throughout the day for optimal lean mass retention/gains. Also protein before bed is important. Still, total calories are what matter the most by far so people should just do what they can stick with.

This is no different than a form of IF. I prefer to do the opposite. If I start eating early it is actually harder for me to control my intake.
