D.M. Becherer's Journal, 11 February 2019

I got a 4 month old red heeler puppy January 29th. She was a lot smaller then I expected. My moms 4 month old red heeler male who's 32 pounds. My little girl only weighed 15 when I got her. I can tell she's put on a little weight cause her ribs aren't quite so noticeable now. She is being a picky eater. I've tried Purina puppy food, Beneiful she wouldn't eat either of them. I asked person I got her from what she ate n she said that she just bought big bag of cheap stuff. I bought her some kibbles n bits. She'll eat little of it, but doesn't seem to like it. Vets suggested the Purina, that she won't eat. I want her to have good food. Neighbor suggested I feed her people food, meats, eggs , rice or oats. Is that safe for puppies? Vet says dogs don't know difference they'll just eat food that's in front of them.
Anyone have ideas on how or what to give my picky little girl ?

I have an Italian mastiff, I think he used to be quite picky but as a pup I have him pumpkin purée in his food when I switched him to a new food. He loved/loves the stuff. I also gave him raw hamburger meat in his puppy food, no adult food (science hill). It’s not super cheap but they sell little bags so you can try it out mix with a wet food. I hope that helps. Good luck!

My mom used to put a cooked egg on top of my dobie's food. She always ended up eating the rest of the food underneath. Also you can add cooked rice to the dogfood.

I wasn't sure what regular foods were safe to give her, or which were the better puppy food brands. Thanks .

You might try a pet owners site— there might be people there with the same kind of dog or who know more about animals than some of us here on Fat Secret.

Congratulations! I googled people foods for dogs and found a site that listed the healthiest people food for dogs (don't remember name of site, sorry) . I used to cook a pot of ground turkey, rice, peas, carrots, green beans, oatmeal, kale, eggs and sweet potatoes for my beloved old dog. I would feed her half her homemade "people food slop" and half kibble. The vet said it was well balanced and fine to feed her. I would just check to make sure the puppy doesn't have different nutritional needs. Fun fact: my new dog doesn't like my cooking! I tried cooking for her when we first got her, and she picked out the meat and left everything else in a discrete pile under the bed, lol.

Mine was the same way. Switched to Imes that you can get at Walmart. Now he eats but only when hungry...like kids. Don’t stress dogs are like people some small some large. Eating is an instinct for survival. Maybe you just got a skinny dog 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ok, i am pretty sure what i found was 10 people food for dogs on the "Modern Dog" website. At the end you can click on 10 more. Again, i personally would double check if it goes for puppies too.

I would like to say thank you to everyone for all the helpful information . Riley & I very much appreciate it. So far I've done the scrambled egg on her food. She likes the eggs. I also cooked up some ground turkey, divided it in half. One part has sweet potatoes, Green beans, turkey, other one has rice, carrots, turkey. Will buy a couple of the small bags of the dog foods suggested next time I go. Til then I'm meal prepping for both of us. 😁
