Debbie Cousins's Journal, 29 January 2021

So, Keto question: Is it okay to go over 20 net carbs (like to 26), as long as my macros stay at 70% Fat and 7% Carbs? I would like to add some cashews to my Cheesy Chicken Risotto tonight, but it will put me over 20g. Even though I've done Keto before, it was very "relaxed" Keto - under 30g Net Carbs and only 60% Fat.

Keto=ketosis. If you eat over 20g carb and remain in ketosis then you are ok, if it knocks you out then you are over your tolerance. Sufficiently low carb for you is what causes ketosis, the % of fat might increase ketones but it also increases calories. Eat fat for energy not a percentage.

good for you to just add what measurement you need of the cashews. I know me, I would eat and eat and eat them. It is a binge, trigger food for me.

It all looks great, to me. But, that, for me, is 2 meals.

It’s okay to drift in and out of Ketosis. How long have you been restricting carbs? Testing with urine strips? Drink water, shake the salt shaker a couple more times, and keep your protein up. KETO worked well for my purposes and for you I’ll bet! Good shedding.

I would say, for me yes. I try to stay at 20, 25 but not much higher than that. Then there are days when Im intermitent fasting where Im well below that.

Oh by the way cashews aren't really keto. So be careful. Stick with pecans almonds walnuts. If I remember right I think pine nuts are also okay. Peanuts definitely Not. They're not even nuts. Keep up the great job.

I suggest to get ketone test strips (in the diabetic aisle of the pharmacy), that way you can fine tune your carb intake to see what is optimal for you.

Cashews have a higher carb count but a small portion should fit in to your count. Peanuts and peanut butter are relatively low in carbs. All depends on remaining in ketosis if that what you want to do. If so stay in ketosis at least a month before cycling out or cheating. You want to get your body to use fat as primary energy.

Seems to me it depends on whether you’re trying to do “relaxed” keto again or if you’re trying to do something more strict right?

Obviously there are reasons, medical and otherwise, to maintain very strict keto. But to me, as a casual dieter, the most effective thing keto has to offer it’s ability to keep you full and satiated, thus staving the desire to go outside of the diet for extra, or “bad”, calories. In a word, adherence. So to me, assuming you’re just casually dieting, then it matters much less the precise grams of fat. The only thing that matters is you set yourself a reasonable ceiling that you can *actually* adhere to. Another thought: maybe try going strict for a day, or two, and lose for a day or two. The days in which you go less strict would be the days you can treat yourself with nuts (or whatever your flavor is). In my opinion, some kind of carb cycling is very important for long term keto dieting too (not to say this idea is really carb cycling).

Listen to your body. I recommend caution with Keto, it caused me to have galbladder attacks that led to a surgery and now I have to eat lower fat foods consistently or pay the price!

yes be careful doing Keto strictly for long periods..My hair fell out and I developed IBSD. Once I stopped doing Keto my body slowly returned back to normal.

I hear ya Brandy. I too had gallbladder removed. Mine was full of gallstones yet i never had high cholesterol #s. Go figure. I chose to eliminate meat and dairy afterwards because of the fat content. It’s all been good so far. Keto may work short term for some but ketosis is not a natural state. I don’t offer diet advice as there are plenty of “experts” here so I just go my merry way and do my own thing. Peace ☮️ and love ❤️ all. Have a wonderful weekend.

for me it would depend. When I do strict weightloss keto I stay close to 20 but some people would not have a problem with a bit more. On maintenance I am higher but if I go over 30 I am crossing the line and not in keto any more. I almost never have cashews. They are legumes and not nuts so far more carby than nuts are

Oh... and the carb number is more important than the macros
