Diana 1234's Journal, 13 August 2020

So..have been having a weird condition that I hope some of you can help me with..
While on vacation, I got up from couch and felt a dreaded twinge in my right shoulder blade muscle. It hurt all day and so I was using heat n ice, as well as doing some stretches. It lasted 3 days. I went to bed and woke up with same pain in left side..!? I thought maybe I was overcompensating and so I followed same routine but did stretches on both sides. That lasted about 5 days. Then I woke up and pain had moved to middle, in between shoulder blades. If I took a deep breath, it felt like someone pierced me with a knife. That lasted around 5 days. Then, I woke up Monday and couldn't turn my neck on right side. This pain is the worst. I can't work out at all and I'm miserable! The pain is horrible! Has anyone ever dealt with this? Please help. I am hesitant to go to Dr as we are still having an increase in covid cases. Thank u!

Not great. I have not dealt with it. But seeing a doctor and or a chiropractor perhaps needed. Hope you feel better

Piercing pain is usually pinched/inflamed nerve and then when you shifted things, the pain moves. You probably need to rest it a few more days w/ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory. I know I always say this, but look at Bob & Brad on YouTube. Kinda dorky, but they have really good videos for specific problems and they are not the BS kind. Yes, I manage to hurt myself regularly enough to have used more than one of their videos. 🤕

My first thought was what Katsolo said. Pinched nerve. I've had shoulder pain for years and it goes down my arm at times. Sometimes I sleep with a pillow propping up my arm. Can you do a phone appointment with your doctor?

Go to the Dr. if you need to. They know how to keep you safe and untended injuries can become bigger problems. It could be shingles, the pain in incredible and can move around,

Sorry you're in pain. :( have you tried really stretching the opposite muscles? like pectoral? also foam rolling all the muscles under your arm pit. sounds kinda strange but when i have a deep back pain like that this usually helps. same with the muscles on the side of the neck and where the neck attached to the shoulder. i love love love my Theracane for this. Stretch the front muscles a few times a day. I also really like the tennis ball against a wall. you can really dig it into the pain points and press and hold while still controlling the pressure. do you have anyone that could massage AROUND the problem area? I think pain like this is often referred from another problem even if that other one isn't apparent.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like you have a pinched nerve, Diana. I've had them, and they can do funny things. They can cause numbness, tingling and/or pain, sometimes far away from where the nerve is being pinched. Sometimes I've had where it felt like someone was burning me on the back with a lit cigarette. Advil helps, but sometimes you just have to avoid moving a certain way for a while. Perhaps a massage would help.

@smoey. I have done all you said. I don't have a roller but did use a friend's. I use a tennis ball everyday. It helps for the moment but not long term. I did lots of stretches on both sides.

@Carolyn. I have had shingles and this seems to feel different. It's not a nerve pain, it's definitely a muscle pain. Thanks for input though! I appreciate it! 💜

@katsolo, I'll try those things you suggested. It does seem more muscle related than nerve related.💜💜💜💜

Hey Diana, I had (and occasionally continue to have) an issue with the same exact pain as you've described. It has different causes for different types of people, so the best case scenario is to go to Dr. I was able to schedule a Zoom call with my Dr recently, so it may be possible to address this without an office visit. As for me, it turned out that I needed to do a few exercises, not stretches, to build up certain muscles that my back and shoulders were overcompensating for, as guided by physical therapy. I do chin tucks, light rows, and other pulling exercises to build my upper body strength. Best of luck to you!

@,Lonnie, Fritzy, and Liv, Thanks for suggestions and input. I have a tremendous threshold for pain, so I know it's bad when it's making me nauseous and my pain level is high. Its making me irritable..lol💜💜💜

@ethgibson, I was working out while it was in shoulder blade with body weight and bands but while it's in neck I feel like I can't. Good suggestion for chin tucks. I have been doing side to side head stretches. They help but I will try the chin tucks. Thx!💜

if you really think it's upper back muscles, try this one. walk into a normal sized doorway with both arms stretched out shoulder height and gently pull forward holding onto the doorframe with your palms facing forward so your arms are slightly behind you. then reverse your hands and gently pull backwards. between swimming and stress, this is one of my best stretches for knots up there. obviously, it if hurts, stop immediately. if it helps, do the same with one arm only on each side. door frames rock. my knot resides on the right side of my upper back, but can make both my shoulders and neck miserable.

Oh dear!!! I am so sorry. That is miserable. I had a very serious neck injury when I was 19, and throughout my life it has caused me pain. Often I could be sick for days with a flare up and not be able to keep anything down including the medication for taking away the pain! How horrible you must be feeling. You have had some wonderful suggestions! I can only add that at never since my accident have I felt less fragile and worried that my neck and shoulders will cause me to feel like that again, because slowly slowly this year I have become so strong and everything is more supported than since I was the teen that first got hurt!

Sorry... I couldnt see! 😁 Anyway, I know you are fit and getting fitter. Maybe it is a little imbalance or pinch or knot. I'm guessing you will find a solution and your continued strength training will help it not come back! I am hoping for the best for you!!! ❤️

I hope you find out what's going on, I had a pinched nerve in my left shoulder and it effected all kinds of stuff. I had needle therapy done and it helped me so much.

Ouch! Hope you resolve it quickly. I tore a tendon in my right shoulder once & it was very painful.
