peeperjj's Journal, 03 April 2020

So far I’ve been out of the house a few times a week grabbing food and looking for things like clorox wipes (everywhere is out, they want you to come in and not call, online is out too). We’ve also had to pick up chromebook a for school and return uniforms and books. When out I’ve picked up carry out food orders. Some people on my FB are freaking out saying we can get sick from the food.

Online school starts Monday morning. We don’t have a time or much information at all yet and it’s after 2pm on Friday. My oldest has 7 teachers and only one has posted a class time twice a week 11:30-12:30. My middle has 4 teachers not including PE, music, GATE etc. she has two teachers who have posted a time. 9-10 and 10-11 m/w. Another teacher said hers is online but no time yet. The other hasn’t said a word.

I’m to learn Zoom over the weekend and join a parent meeting for my middle kiddo. My youngest’s teacher is a friend and it’s all online and I have all that saved and ready to go. She also has speech and I’ll have to learn that app and teach her myself.

The school wants us to drive over every day (20 min each way) to get free lunches so the school doesn’t lose funding for this fall. We do know that during the same time my oldest two have classes. A neighboring school district is begging for people to bring their kids every day because they aren’t getting enough kids through the line daily and are risking losing their school lunch funding for this fall. They hand out at the same time our school will (we start next week).

I’ve been calm through everything going on but this not knowing anything until the last minute is driving me batty! We’ve known for 2 weeks we were doing to do distance learning because they sent us a survey over two weeks ago asking if we had internet and devices or needed to check them out through the school. Almost didn’t get one for our middle because they thought we could maybe share one device for three kids I guess. Our iPad minis and iPad are old and won’t hold a charge for more than like an hour and I can’t get new batteries and have them installed in time. We have one computer but hubby pays bills on it and they can’t all use it at the same time. We’ve heard rumors that school will be in the mornings for all grades. Thankfully we were able to borrow two chrome books (was going to throw a fit if we couldn’t because we pay $100 a year for them to buy chromebooks and have been told we can check them out but have never been able to do so).

Very thankful it’s gym day! Home workouts suck but I need to get some of this anxiety out! My meds help a lot but not on last minute things!! 2:25 and we’ve yet to see a full plan or even a start time for Monday morning.

I get it in a way. Teachers aren’t allowed in the school yet but was told some are going in to get what they need. No more than 10 can be in the building at once. But they all have had time to grab their stuff and work from home. Parents are expected to learn these programs and apps to teach our kids so the teachers should at least have a game plan by now. My oldest has sent messages to her teachers and only one has responded. Her health teacher of all teachers lol. Our middle school will be giving ‘full credit’ for 20% of the semester grade if my oldest completes 75% of the work or more. I guess that means it’s like a participation grade? Haven’t heard anything from the elementary school yet. I know my kindergartener will be pass/fail. I’m kinda friends with her teacher and she’s said my lil one is one of the brightest students in class. She passed her sight words early, was reading early, catches on to things quickly and she said we will have no problems with 1st grade. I’ve been printing off 1st grade worksheets for her and she understands them quickly. Her best friends are also smarty pants and we were told they had to divide the higher kids up among 4 teachers next year so she probably won’t be with the other girls who are ahead of the class.

Hubby is an essential worker (agricultural sales) but can work from home a lot. Thankfully I’m a stay at home mom. My days are going to be way different than usual but I’ll be able to help the kiddos. My oldest not so much. They have no books or anything and it’s all based off of the teachers lecture which I don’t get to see/hear. Kinda hard to help when we have a worksheet and no instructions and my oldest can’t remember or can’t explain it to me. My middle is in the gifted program so maybe she can help me help her sister lol. I’ll be spending my mornings with the youngest. I volunteer a bit in that class so have seen some of what they do. That’s my friends class. She’s already sent me advanced resources for the lil one because so far she’s bored with what I’m giving her lol. She’s fascinated with messenger kids right now and I’m letting her talk to her friends a lot. She’s learning to type at age 5! That is holding her fascination right now.

How do you plan to do the online learning? Help in the evenings?
03 Apr 20 by member: peeperjj
No, the state realized there was no time to get out all the laptops so we are as of right now on a pass/fail.

What a fiasco! You'll find your groove though. :)

Try it with a grade 12 student. Sad. Looks like no graduation. They start Monday here but only heard from one teacher yet. And it’s Friday night. It is a disaster but I’m not worried. Last thing my son needs is me freaking out. He will be fine. All the kids will be ok in my opinion. Schools cannot hold this against them. Don’t stress peeper. It will work out. ❤️🙏

I can’t imagine having a senior during all this. It’s Friday evening here too and yet to hear from most of the teachers. I’m not letting the kids see me freaking out ;). I hope the discussions are typed out or videoed for later viewing. That makes the most sense to me. That way the kids sharing devices can access material when they have an opportunity rather than set times. Maybe that’s why we haven’t heard from teachers yet. They are making vids or something. Our school is doing graduation this summer for seniors but no word on the 8th grade graduation yet.

No word on grad here at all. Fingers crossed!! 🤞🏻

Don’t worry, you can easily make your own Clorox wipes. It’s the TP we can’t make, but that situation is a smidge better

No idea yet either re: GRADUATIONS. This year I have 4 grandkids who are supposed to graduate.

Kenna, I made my own Lysol wipes using a thing of Lysol cleaner and paper towels. Works pretty well, but I don’t have an airtight container so I’m hoping the don’t dry out quickly with the container I have them in. Hubby is a bit of a prepper. He bought 100 rolls of toilet paper several years ago and just brought some out of storage. We use 2 rolls a day with all of us so that’s only going to last us about 6-7 weeks. Hopefully the stores will have toilet paper by then. Our stores have been out of all of it. This week they put out one case of cottonelle when I went to look for Clorox wipes. I think there were 8 things of TP total.

I hope things get all worked out before Monday. Hugs to all out there

Got an email. Starting Monday there going online through Google. All next week will be the kids getting acclimated to the online set up. I hear you on last minute changes 😫 It’s a good thing but it’s been back and fourth. But it is only for middle and high school. I have not heard anything for elementary. My lil is in kindergarten. I guess they are trying to get the chrome book out still for students.

We’ve finally heard from all the teachers except one. We were able to check out a chrome book for each of my two older girls but one isn’t wanting to load google classroom and the other is older (my daughter is upset about this lol). I’m glad we finally got both of them as their classes are at the same times. My oldest has overlapping classes three days a week but thankfully they’ll be recording them so she can watch later. If you need kindergarten stuff check out ABCYA.com. They have free games. Also lots of zoos are doing educational online stuff with the animals. Messenger kids has been nice to keep my kindergartener entertained with visiting with a few of her friends who also have it.
