Vocatus's Journal, 14 January 2019

Inspired by my morning weight reveal, I went outside and did 1 solid minute of jumping jacks -- though if I'm being honest, the last 20 seconds probably looked quite pathetic lol. Then I took, what was for me, a vigorous hike around the neighborhood. Some steep hills out here. I drove the loop afterward, and it came up just shy of a mile. I'll be conservative and call it 0.9, even though the trip meter probably would have rolled over to 1 just feet away lol.

My time was 16 minutes, 12.12 seconds. That's probably not impressive for most folk, but at not quite 10 pounds shy of 300, I'm ecstatic. Of course, I stopped to catch my breath at the top of the two worst hills -- and to pet the neighbor's dog for a moment so he'd stop trying to maul me to lick my face.

pretending that I didn't stop twice, my average walk speed was: 3.33 MPH, according to the following calculator

https://www.calculator.net/pace-calculator.html?ctype=pace&ctime=00%3A16%3A12.12&cdistance=0.9&cdistanceunit=Miles&cpace=00%3A08%3A10&cpaceunit=tpm&printit=0&x=62&y=28

So I decided to reward myself with a treat

a quart jar full of water with about a tspn of raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar!

Ahhh, that was refreshing :D

No matter how slow you go, you are moving and that is all that matters! I started out at 288 lbs. and had to walk with a cane, taking 10 minutes to go just 1/4 mile before I needed to stop and rest. I kept going and eventually I could go farther and faster and do more. It's taken me 18 months to get up to 5 miles in 100 minutes before I need to stop.

Thank you everyone, but I'd like to share the congrats with conicassity. going from walking with a cane and barely doing 1/4 mile to 5 miles ain't no joke. I know I have to be careful not to overdo the workout at this phase, and that I'm making great progress and that I'll get to where I want to be, but it certainly was a rude awakening when I actually started working out a little. There was a point in my life where I regularly did hundreds of push-ups a day, could lung and squat all day long if I wanted to, and actually ran my miles. It doesn't take long in the 300 pound area to realize you can't do that stuff anymore lol.

When I started looking at financing for a mobility scooter March, 2017 I knew I was in serious trouble. I had a very good physical therapist who knew just how far to push me without doing more damage. The goal was just to get to a point where I could have knee surgery, but after a couple months I'd improved so much we postponed the surgery. It's still postponed. By the time I was ready to give up the cane, that is when I started taking control of my food intake to get my blood sugar under control, but kept in mind that best advice my physical therapist gave me; Take it slow because the time will pass anyway. The slower you go, the fewer set-backs you'll have and the easier it will be to reach your goals.
