DIET DRINKS - I should confess that I've always had a preference for the taste of diet pepsi/coke over their full leaded cousins. I'm also abhorred when I see just how much sugar goes into the normal pepsi/coke.
Imagine my surprise when I read that diet drinks could actually cause weight gain😲
I'd appreciate any thoughts or shared wisdom on the subject.

PS I should also say that I've been substituting diet coke for beer and that seems like no-brainer. Vut any thoughts would be appreciated

I have to say that I'm deadly biased. I drank diet pop for years because I came from a heavily diabetic and hypoglygemic family and so like you, I considered it a health no brainer. I even raised my kids to drink them. I've lived with daily migraines and I'm not exaggerating the daily for over 24 years and for 20 of those I refused to give up the diet pop. I had given up everything else, had my teeth pulled, you name it, I'd probably done it or investigated it. I finally tried going without the diet soda. After 90 days I had a day w/o a migraine. Then my pain journals showed that my migraines were 4-6 points lower. My belief came to be that aspartame (Equal) is toxic to the body and needs magnesium to be cleared from the system. Your body uses the magnesium in your system first for your heart, then for your brain, then to clear toxins in your liver and organs and it is needed to actual use the glycogen your muscles store so it can be accessed. When you start running it down and using it to clear toxins you get weird things happening, like neurological effects...migraines all over your body like I get. I take supplemental magnesium, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to the problems I've caused my body. That's aspartame. LOL💁🏻

Next, Sucralose better and not as big an offender if you are talking straight toxins. Look up sweeteners and Dr. Berg on YouTube. He does a good job of explaining these. Sucralose is a fructose molecule with some other molecule I have to apologize t

Finishing the sucralose, sorry, don't remember other molecule. But the fructose molecule will raise your insulin after the digestion process on this instead of during like the glycemic index stuff. So the load isn't as bad, but there is a load and a hit for a diabetic. The ONLY thing you can drink that doesn't have any kind of hit is water! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Coffee has some ups and downs. Dehydration being the big down and green tea as well. Natural sweeteners are actually easier for your body to process in very small quantities. And that is the BIG thing to understand right there... if you are going to be drinking 3 or 6 six packs or liters of beer or diet soda a day which is going to fit into your Way of Eating and be halfway healthy for you in the future? Maybe a beer or two on the weekend and switching to a soda made with sucralose or if you can find one made with stevia? Stevia has carbs in it upfront, but most versions of it are a bit better for you... I won't even talk about the carbonic acid experiments we did in college! 😁🙋🏻

Thanks SMP. Some food (drink) for thought there. I've already reduced by beer consumption by 75% and I feel better for it. Diet soda is a substitute, but not in the same quantities. I suppose I'll just have to try and cut down a bit further.
