WINTER BLUES

I remember reading an article that January 1st may not be the best time to make New Year's Resolutions, especially for people with S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

Please bear with me if I sound like I'm making excuses but I know I get a mild dose of it every year. And I wonder (after reading some of the comments on here) that some of my FS Buddies may too.

Since I know this about myself, I have a plan of action. I am just going to take it easy for the next couple of weeks. No, I'm not going "off plan" or giving up on my exercise program - I'm just not going to try to start any ambitious programs that are destined to fail.

And, for whatever it is worth, I offer this advice: To any of you who are lacking motivation right now - Don't give up! Try to hang in there a little while longer. The days are gradually getting longer, the sun will get warmer and spring will come - I promise!

Buffy, this is exactly where I am, so maybe I have a reason. I am with you girl and not going to give up that I am sure of, just have to work through it. I have to say it makes a big difference to me and how I feel if the sun is shining I seem to be able to deal with anything.

Yvonne - Good for you! I know from my Journal that last year I started having more energy around February 4th. I know everybody is different but I'm happy that is not long for me to wait.

Hope - The sell special lamps for S.A.D. And the price has come way down since they first came out with them. Maybe I should smarten up and invest in one.

Oh I know how you feel, Buffy! Before I remarried, I had a fixer upper farmhouse that I bought as a cheaper "housing" situation for me. LOL! It was like a blank canvas ... all the walls were icky beige. I love to decorate, so my thoughts were shabby cottage chic decor and a country French theme in colors. So my walls went to white or yellow or blue. For the first time in my life.. I didn't get the winter blahs. The bright colors just took away all the grey outside. Colors can change your mood. So dress brightly and find some bright colored pillows for your sofa or just brighten your rooms with accessories. That's my tip for the winter blahs. LOL! I don't have those wonderful colors now in my whole house but still have a couple of rooms that I can open the door to see some sunshine. Hubby likes the traditional dark greens ... but that is the color of nature and I am cool with that too. LOL!

Mom2Boxers - Maybe you can get Hubby to agree on one brightly painted "Sunshine Room" for you. I think I'll take your advice and search the clearance racks for some brightly colored sweaters.

Oh Buffy, you know I have a Happy Light..I got it for about $30 at Tuesday Morning...but they are coming down..I use mine while walking on the treadmill for 20 to 30 mins..it has really helped me..And wearing brighter colors and having the things that M2B said is a really good idea...Hope you feel better soon and may the sunshine start earlier...Hugs...:O)

Buffy, I know that my hubby has the same problem and he can't "see" the sun. It is not just the light, but I think the Vitamin D that we get from the sun, being able to be out in fresh air, and just the feeling of the warmth. He sure goes through a tough time about now, but there are other reasons as well. Have a great day, and you are right...just a few more weeks and things will be much better!

Bren - I really do need to get one. I saw it in my drugstore but didn't have time to price it.

Stef - I agree with you about that - I've been taking D3's but nothing beats the real thing. Hope DH feels better ASAP.

I know I always feel better when the sun shines and music helps too! You will get through this! Take care, don't be hard on yourself ... One day at a time sweetie! Hugs!

Java - Thanks. The point of my journal is that I am not being hard on myself. At my age I've learned there are times to push myself and times not to. This is a time not to.

Light, light, light. I have maybe 20 lamps in my house; they go on first thing in the morning and stay on all day. I told my husband many years ago, "don't mess with my light....it is cheaper than therapy!". I too love to decorate and painted my walls a soft bronze color that really catches warmth and light. It really helps with the northwest grey winters! Blessings all......

That's great you know and understand yourself so well! Wish you the best!

Buffy - I know about this too well. One of the thousand reasons why I moved to the US. The winter are so much brighter here than in Germany. It drove me nuts some years. Some winters I had to go to the tanning bed just not to get into depression.

F8thful1 - I had the "light battle" with my husband for years. Then he learned that a burning light bulb produces heat and actually helps with the heating bill! Now I can't get him to turn off a light!

Jozette - I did not know that about Germany. Is it because of the mountains or the clouds or something else?
