Just got started. When I'm eating at home, it's easy to plan & count. When family members want to dine out, I'm struggling to find sugar content on menu items, so I'm not sure how to handle it.

Eating out is never easy. It still causes me a lot of anxiety. But there are ways you can make it an easier experience. Try to eat thing as close to their natural state as possible so that if you can't readily identify the ingredients, just by looking what the ingredients are, then there are probably a lot of hidden fat and carbs in there you should avoid. Also, a really good trick is to order your food and to ask for half of it to be packed in a take out container before it's brought to your table, so that you won't be tempted to over eat. Also, make sure you tell you family that you're watching what you're eating and need their support to follow through. You might be surprised at how well many people will take it and will be supportive of your decision and will help you out whenever you're in doubt. However, some family members may feel threatened by your new-found will to a healthier lifestyle and may (either consciously or unconsciously) try to sabotage your efforts in order to avoid having to face up to their own unhealthy lifestyles. Don't get angry at them, but do know what you've taken the best decision for you and find strength in that knowledge when your family or friends may be pushing a piece a triple fudge and whipped cream cake towards you. You're stronger than that and have a precise goal in mind of how you want to feel once you've reached your goal. The fact that you're here shows that you've taken the first steps and are committed. Now it's just a matter of time. You can do this. Rock on!

Thanks! Just yesterday I was proud that I turned down peanut m&ms and a bite of a friend's chocolate brownie sundae. I'm just fine when I'm not eating sugar, but once I start, I can't seem to stop. My family is supporting me, and my boyfriend has even joined me on this pursuit (though he only has 5 pounds to lose :) ). Thanks for the advice. Any suggestions on good restaurants to try for my best choices?
