My son and I completed a 10 mile milestone run last night in 2 hours 8 minutes! (8 miles was our previous longest run). About a 12:45 min/mile average pace. After a brief thunderstorm that evening the temp dropped from 91 to 82 degrees, but it was still very humid. At 6 miles my right patella started to ache a little; at 7 miles I was ready to quit; at 8 we were passing within ¼ mile of the house and I really wanted to make the turn home, but my boy said "let's just get to the end of this road and that will put us at 9 miles, which is still a personal best for us both". By then, ankles, calves and knees in both legs were feeling aches. Lungs were fine with heart rate around 140. I looked ¼ mile down the road to the first intersection. "I can make it to there" I thought. At that intersection, I set my sights on the next intersection... and so on, and before I knew it, I was at 9 miles and making the turnaround to run home. By then, it was easy to say "I might as well run 1 more mile back, then walk ¼ mile home. Got home, drank 2 bottles of water and gingerly waded into the pool to cool my body down and stretch. Climbed out of the pool 10 minutes later and felt like I weighed 300 lbs! Rest day today!

Wow. That is a long run! But fantastic that you did it, and IMO even more so that you did it with your son. I have 3 daughters who I love very much, but I would have loved to have a son too. Nice description of how you broke the end of it down to "in sight" segments and got it done.
