A Tale of Two Syrups

I love my Saturday pancakes and occasionally, like this week, will have them mid-week, as well. This past mid-week breakfast, I was hit with a sudden bout of gastric distress a few hours after eating them.

I narrowed down the culprit to my new pancake syrup, Maple Grove Farms Sugar Free Low Calorie Maple Flavor Syrup (MGF). I had used up the last of the Mrs. Butterworth's Sugar Free syrup (MB) that morning, with only a bit of it left to use up in the bottle. Most of the syrup on my pancakes was the MGF variety.

There were only slight differences between the 2 varieties as well as the Hungry Jack version, which I've also tried, so I didn't think it was any big deal. On a closer look, there is a perhaps significant difference in the sugar alcohols. Both varieties use the same one, sorbitol. But the MGF variety has 10 g. in 1/4 cup and the MB has 8 in the same serving size. Now 2 little measly grams may not seem like much, but another way to look at it is that the MGF has 25% more SAs than MB!

I should also note that MB contains aspartame, as well as sugar alcohol. MGF contains sucralose/Splenda, as well as sugar alcohol.

As a reference, my favorite Atkins bar has 4g. of sugar alcohol, albeit from a different source - maltitol. Other bars we have on hand indicate anywhere from 4-11g. of sugar alcohol per bar, with most in the 4-7g. range (the brownie one and the PB cups have 10-11g.)

So, for me, I guess I need to watch my intake of sorbitol. I've got more MB on hand now, so I'll be carefully using small amounts of the MGF syrup, just to use it up, but using more of the MB.

I'm trying out my adjusted syrup this morning, so we'll see how it goes.

Other FYIs on the syrups: total calorie difference is 10 calories per quarter-cup, with MB showing 20 calories and MGF showing 30. Total carbs on MB is 8 (all SA) and MGF is 10 (all SA). Sodium is higher in the MB (160 vs. 100 mg).

On other news, I walked 3.1 miles this AM, all of it with 1 doggy and 1.9 of it with 2 doggies. Still beautiful weather with a nice breeze.

I talked to the BBQ host for tonight and guess what we get to bring? SALAD!!!! Yay!!!!

Sandy - Thanks again for reminding me why I haven't tried any products with sugar alcohols in them yet (and probably never will). As for the BBQ, nice that you get to put all the goodies in the salad that you like. Have fun.

Sandy - looking at your food diary I see you used Maple Grove Farms Sugar Free Pancake & Waffle Mix... I've purchased the MGF Sugar free syrup, but haven't found pancake mix. Where did you purchase ? I live in Kansas, so any hints where I could find sugar free pancake mix, cause I'm dying for some pancakes.

Buffy...I do like some of the products with SAs in them, but it's become apparent I can't tolerate a higher load of the SAs. Even my syrup re-mix of a lesser amount of the MGF variety still gave me a bit of distress....enough to take something for it. So, my next experiment, probably next Saturday, will be to just go back to using the MB and see how I do. If that creates a problem for me, then something in my body's chemistry has changed in the last 2 weeks. Taking a salad last night was eprfect! Easy to record in my journal and exactly what I planned on having for dinner anyway. Hope you're having a restful Sunday.

Notfast....I know you already found the mix but it can be found in a number of grocery stores by all their other pancake mixes. Because it's sugar-free, it might also be merchandised with their other specialty food products, diabetic products, etc. I know I've seen it in Wal-Mart too.

I am sorry you had a bad reaction to the syrup. It's the one that I use, but I have not noticed any side effects. I do measure it out in a tablespoon and rarely have more than that! I do usually put a small pat of butter, then the syrup. I buy the mix at Hannaford's, but that chain may be local to New England.

Ohh YUCKY! Bummer reaction to syrup, but good think you figured out what it was from! I love pancakes, I will look at Wally World next time I am there for that mix, I have been making the protien powder version, which really were pretty good & so simple, maybe I shouldn't worry about the boxed mix after all! Lindas Low Carb web site has a "Better than boxed pancake" which I have tried twice now & yummy it was (if you try it, do add the 2 teaspoons water, as what a huge difference it makes). Now, I am hungry for pannycakes (that's what my grandma always called them)! True comfort food!
