mars2kids's Journal, 23 March 2015

It was a crazy weekend. We found out Friday that my dad will be coming home for good on Wednesday. They had told us they thought it would be July, but insurance doesn't think he needs to stay. My mom and dad are both happy that he gets to come home, so as long as they're not worried about it, I'm happy too, but it's stressful because we thought we had more time to get things done in the house, like rails put up in bathrooms and things. For those who don't know, my dad had a stroke on Thanksgiving and has been in the hospital then at a rehab facility learning how to do everything again since January. He is walking better with a cane, but I'm sure there will be some falls in the house from time to time. It will be easy does it for a while.

Then Saturday after my dad came home for a quick visit, my aunt fell and broke her elbow. She never married or had kids, so we're as close to that as she has. I have the easiest time taking time off work, so I'll probably be taking her for surgery and some appointments in the near future. Just when we thought we had one person on the road to recovery and coming home, now we have another down and out. Luckily she can still use the other arm and walk, so she can get around her house okay. She has injuries almost every year and this is the second time she's broken the same elbow.

So, why should I exercise and eat healthy? Just looking at my dad and my aunt gives me my reason. People who do healthy things still have strokes and break bones, but I'm going to at least try to reduce my chances. I need to be thinking about them when I'm wanting to reach for junk food or make excuses not to exercise. It's going to be a busy next few weeks, but making myself healthy has to be part of it.

I hope everyone has a great (injury free) week!

I love the way you write. It's like being in the same room with you. I love your summation about how better nutritional and health choices can impact our future. I also like how compassionately you take care of those around you! You're a blessing in the lives around you, for sure.

That is indeed the best reason of all. When I did my clinicals I was working on a rehab floor in the hospital, lots of stroke patients and fall injuries. The best way to reduce the risk of both is to eat healthy and get that exercise. I've seen people who should be enjoying retirement being spoon fed thickened liquids because of a stroke. They are frustrated, depressed, sometimes they aren't able to communicate and that would be infuriating in and of itself. Wonderful motivation, your head is certainly in the right place!
