Sandy701's Journal, 12 May 2011

I walked a bit extra today for a total of 3.5 miles; just .8 with both doggies and then a total of 2.0 with one doggy, and the rest by myself. I got a later start than I should to make it easier/cooler for my gal with the heart murmur, so I dropped her off at home after just that .8 mile loop. But my energetic guy NEEDS some extra work to make him liveable, so he got in a solid 2 miles this AM, going on shady streets whenever possible.

It's another gorgeous, although quite warm day, with moderate humidity. I think it was about 82 when I finished up all the loops, and that was before 11AM.

This is the second day this week, I walked 3.5 miles, up a bit from my now-usual 3.3 miles. I don't plan on making this a permanent change, as walking already takes up more time than I would prefer. I don't think that I want to commit to doing over a 1-hour exercise program 5-6x/week on a permanent basis. Realistically, that's just not me. And just like my WOE, I'm looking at doing only those things that I feel I can do on an ongoing basis. Actually...I guess even this 3.3-mile walking program is an exception - for now - while I'm still in weight LOSS mode.

I received a few more comments about my weight loss at the thrift store where I volunteer. Now that they've seen my donations in a larger size and know that I've been losing, they're more apt to talk about it. One gal, who doesn't work in the donations area, asked me if I had been losing weight. It's pretty nice that people are noticing enough of a loss to actually say something.

There was a previous forum post asking WHEN other people (not family) started noticing one's weight loss. For me, it wasn't until about 65 pounds lost, or 27.7% of my initial weight. That seems like a long time, and it was, but then again, I had not told a single one of these people that I was trying to lose weight and none of them had seen me eat any food, so they couldn't tell from my changed meals.

The good news is what someone else posted: As one gets smaller, each pound makes a bigger impact when lost, due to it being a larger percentage of one's weight. (That is, 10 pounds lost out of 500 pounds may not seem visible at all but 10 pounds lost out of 100 will be quite noticeable!) So, that should mean that with each lost pound, it should become more and more visible and noticeable! Yea!

Sandy, Thanks for the interesting info. DH says he's noticed that I've lost but he would know to say that even if he actually hadn't have noticed.

I am happy you are getting compliments! People are noticing that you are changing & that's not always easy, especially if they see you often I think it's harder. I think you have the key to success in figuring out what you will be able to sustain, or in other words actually live with when the losing phase is over. I try to keep that in mind, and sometimes actually force myself to ask that question just like that: Now, is something I will be able to do for the rest of my life? And, do happily with my whole heart? I don't want to lie to myself on that answer. I think it is really good that you are taking an honest look at what you are doing. Great job! Along about today I always start wondering what the scale will say on weigh in day. Good luck on yours!

It is great to hear other people confirm what you know. Great work.

You're lucky BuffyBear...my DH didn't mention anything about my weight loss until I had lost close to 40 pounds!

GG-Girl...It's great you're also looking at the "Could I do this long-term?" question. I've seen too many "do Atkins" by subsisting on meager calories and the "protein shake and a radish" style meals, as I like to call them. I always wonder....Do they really intend to eat just that on an ongoing basis? Some diets are like that.....eat something really odd for awhile, lose the weight and then go back to eating what you used to eat. But Atkins isn't like that - or shouldn't be treated that way, at least. Oh well, people are free to choose whatever they want to do to their own bodies. Enjoy your swimming time tomorrow morning and have a good weekend.

Melissa, it's true that the ol' external validation is great. I was actually beginning to wonder if these people I volunteer with would EVER notice the change and say something. Must be their eyesight! LOL!!

Sandy, you are doing amazing!! Great job with the walking, and I am so glad that others are finally beginning to really notice your losses! People are finally starting to say something to me, but I haven't really lost anything since last October...just about 3 or 4 pounds. Maybe it is because I am dressing in summer clothes which are less bulky. Anyway, hope you have an awesome Friday!

Hey Sandy - for me it was around the 30-40 lb mark, before people I see only occasionally started asking...'hey, are you losing weight'? In my head I thought, yeah, where you been? But I guess it takes awhile for it to really show! NOW, you are correct, just a few pounds, and people would be saying "you don't need to lose anymore weight, etc..." It's just weird! They see me from the outside in... and I see me from the inside out! So glad things are going well with you! Hope you enjoy your weekend! Much Love.

Stef, I don't know about you, but for me, I'm also starting to wear some of my older, better fitting clothes and not hiding away in huge t-shirts as much. As a result, they can actually SEE that I look smaller. Have a great weekend and don't go rolling around in the dirt so much!! LOL!!

Paula, I'm actually glad to hear that someone else also had to wait for people to notice the weight loss....I was beginning to develop a complex! So glad you stopped by. You have a great weekend, as well.
