Good Morning, FS Warriors! Got up about 3:30, dressed out and took to the asphalt. Did about 3.6 miles this morning, including the warmup. Ran at a slow recovery pace; speed workout is tomorrow. I'm going to run a series of timed miles over the next month, gradually increasing my pace with each one until I get a pretty good idea of what I can do in a mile. From there, I will calculate my training paces for the easy runs, the speed workouts and the long runs, and ultimately, I will be able to predict my half marathon performance.

It seems I run into different dogs every time I run. So far, I've never stopped running. I just talk to them and keep jogging along. Usually, they will fall in behind me and run a little bit of the way with me, and I just pray they aren't going to take a bite out of my ankles. :D So far, so good. The worst of it is, I think I scare the hell out of them when I come up on them, and then when they let out a howl, they scare the sh$t of of me! Remember, it's dark out there. I don't see them and they don't see me until I'm right on top of them. I think they must lie down in the road. Sometimes, it's just a dark blob in the road, and I think it's a road kill, and then it jumps up and lets out a howl from hell. That's why it's especially important for me to watch what I eat the night before a run; I don't want to leave it right there in the road!

I spent much of the day yesterday mowing and pulling weeds. Usually, by this time of the year, there isn't much happening with the yard. Not this year. We've had an abundance of rain, and the grass and weeds just keep on a coming. I thought we might do something for the holiday, but DW slept till 2:00; guess she didn't feel well. So, I just kept busy most of the day. They had a Star Trek marathon on the Sy Fy channel yesterday, so when I came in, and while DW made supper, I actually sat and watched a Star Trek movie - the one where the Vulcan terrorist takes over the Enterprise and makes them take him to where he believes heaven to be. I don't think it's the most exciting one I ever watched, but it was all right.

Well, Sarah, the young lady I was telling you about, was taken into the prep room approx. 7:00 Central time. Her dad is very anxious and I'm sure he would appreciate your prayers. She's only about 18, and just started college.

This will be a short week, but short weeks have a habit of seeming very long at work for some reason. I guess we just expect the week to fly by, because we were already off one day. But I'm not sure how it works, I think they somehow make the other 4 days longer. Not even sure who they are. Well, my Friends, I hope you all had a great weekend; and will have a great week as well. Toodles!

Dogs scare me in the daylight. I can't imagine what I'd have to eat the night before that wouldn't end up on the road if I ran into a scenario such as you describe! I am praying for Sarah, her dad, the doctors, etc...actually my prayer list has grown substantially since joining FS.

You should carry half of an old broom handle with you if you are running that early that is what I used to do that way if a dog comes out you can fight it off same if a person comes at you plus it is easily carried while you run

Sarah is out of surgery, Dad says things went well. Thanks! Well, Rockiesfan, I don't think I can carry any more than I already do, flashlight, water bottle. I'm counting on people not letting dogs run loose if they're hostile. So far, so good.

WOW - you're killing me here with this running at 3:30am! Why so darn early? Are you insomniac? LOL, just kidding DK. I love your dedication and plan for success. Great stuff!

Thank you again for the update on Sarah. Good, surgery is one hurdle behind her! Good job on the run! Dogs are always a little iffy when you scare them. Like any animal, being startled is hard on the nerves. I am glad they are friendly. Hope that keeps up! Back in the day when I used to run around the fields I had my moments. Once was a big buck (deer)with a huge rack. Beautiful, but scared the both of us because I had just come around the bend right on him. Next time was a huge dark snake. Scared me so bad, I didn't even look to see what kind it was, ran harder in the opposite direction. Probably was a black snake which I generally like seeing. If you see a black snake around here means the copperhead snakes aren't close. Loved seeing the turtles, green garter snakes, and other wildlife.

HCB, more out of necessity. Just can't get to work and get everything done before I leave, unless I get up at 3:30 or 4:00. It's about an hour to work.
