today i am driving to amish country with my husband's aunt to visit for 3 days. the rest of my husband's family will be there. i am not looking forward to it because all there is to do is shop and i don't like shopping. i am worried about what i am going to eat. at least there will be a lot of walking. there is a huge flea market and we usually spend all day there. my back has been hurting and i can only walk a little at a time, so we'll see how that goes. truly not looking forward to it.

Amish Country! Is your husband's family Amish? Wouldn't it be a great place to buy good food, made as nature intended? I'd love to go! I'm so intrigued! I wouldn't be worried about what to eat, as you'd be eating wholesome, no? Maybe my imagination is sparked.. I would tell the aunt that you can only go to the flea market for half a day, as your back is painful,, or bring a folding chair in the car, and a book...Don't suffer the day to please anyone. Make a plan so you can rest comfortably somewhere. let us know how it went!

have fun & watch out for the delicious but not-always-so-healthy Amish cooking. Yummy!

A folding chair and book sounds like good advice. Make the most of every situation. Hope you survive. :)

monique, my husband's family was mennonite. it is not a place for natural food. puhpine is right. "good and wholesome lard." the ingredients are made from scratch, but there is nothing natural about it. it is full of calories, carbs and bad stuff. i'm amazed all the amish aren't fat, but definitely all the visitors were fat. plus, pie, pie, pie.

They are remnotely related to the dutch and i know traditional dutch food ... mashed potatoes, lard, bacon and more lard. lard is best used after 6 months, just scrape off the fuzzy white stuff and you are good to go... in their defence: it takes a lot of manual labour to do all that work, if you cannot use machines. How strict where they? there are extremists and liberals even among amish ;)

I live a bit from the Amish areas- we have them here in OH. I have never cared for the food, too much fat, too heavy, too much starch. It used to be a pleasant place to go, but with all of the commercialism that went in, it is so packed now. The buggies practically get run off the road. I know this is important to your husband, but I think you need to stay home. A hotel bed would not help me when my back is bed, plus the drive. Both rough on a back injury. Best of luck.
