Peanut butter journal time!!!!

I finally got some blood glucose test strips thanks to my buddy at work. I haven’t tested in over a month which made me a little nervous since the whole reason for my lifestyle change is to beat pre-diabetes and become healthy and fit. I’ve been doing really well on the “healthy” and “fit” parts but have been worried about my glucose levels since they were going unchecked. I began the Targeted Ketogenic diet about the same time that I ran out of test strips. The “targeted” part means that I consume 16 grams of dextrose (a type of sugar) prior to working out to purposely spike my blood sugar and refill my muscle glycogen stores. For the past month I had no idea how this was affecting my glucose levels….. Until today! So, here is my log through lunch.

3:50am - I woke up
4:10am - Fasting glucose - 102
4:32am - Pre-workout (post dextrose) - 133
6:04am - 30 minutes post-workout - 105
11:08am - Pre-lunch reading - 101
12:00pm - 30 minute post-lunch reading - 106
12:30pm - 1 hour post-lunch reading - 110
1:30pm - 2 hour post-lunch reading - 103

Seeing these decent glucose readings takes a lot of stress off of my mind. I will not be daily testing like this again (too expensive!) but I will start doing a weekly fasting check on Friday mornings when I normally weigh in.

Oh, and I got my body fat calipers but I don’t think I measured accurately last night so I am going to try again tonight. Initially I came up with 9% body fat. There is no way that is correct!! Once I figure it out I will start including a body fat measurement on Friday's weigh in as well.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

That's wonderful news, so glad that your glucose levels are doing better! Mine had been approaching pre-diabetic so I know how good you must feel.

Wonderful. I am so happy for you. I was stupid and did not really make any changes over the years when I was Pre-diabetic. But after going over the threshold, I did try to change. As it stands now, I would not be diabetic but as you probably know, once you go over - you are always categorized as diabetic. You are smart to nip that in the bud.

My fasting numbers were pre diabetic too (120's-130's). Keto has really dropped them (80's-90's). My dad has adult onset diabetes and his dad had it too. I am 45 and trying to beat the system.

I would like to see my fasting numbers closer to 90 but I think that’s just going to take some time. And maybe more sleep, I don’t know. I normally only get 5-6 hours during the week. I don’t know how this plays on the morning glucose readings. I should test on the weekend when I get 8 or more hours. @Alex, you seem to be doing good managing yours. I can’t remember, are you on meds? @Tia, that’s great! Did you do anything special to get your fasting reading down? @JMB, thanks for the support bud! I have figured out the weight loss, the working out, and the eating healthy but I just can’t wrap my head around the blood sugar thing. I understand how it all works, I just don’t understand my readings sometimes. Blood sugar is weird. I got a mild flu a while back and my glucose was 120-150 for the entire time that I was sick. Once I started feeling better, it went back down. It just seems like glucose levels vary so much for so many different reasons.

The variation is why it is so difficult to control. If you get sick or too tired your numbers will go up. I am not on meds for Blood Sugar thankfully. So far - so good. A low carb diet is the very best thing ... Interestingly, some diabetics can eat some foods and be fine - others can't. For me, I have to stay very low carb in order to control by sugar. SOmething like and apple will do really bad things to me. But apples are commonly allowed on a diabetic diet. It is really strange. The disease really does require a person to learn about his or her own body. It is not a one size fits all thing

Thanks Alex!

Brent, I went from eating what I wanted (anything and everything, sometimes binging) to LCHF. I stay under 30 net carbs per day, spread them out, and usually it's much lower than 30 net carbs. I didn't really track time very well and I didn't track blood sugar consistently. I am thinking a few weeks to a month maybe?

9%!!! Wow. Where did you get those calipers. I want some. Are you using Scooby's body fat calculator? Watch the video. One other trick I've found. Stick your thumb in your bellybutton (clean out the lint first) and pinch the fat vertically. Far easier to get it. Horizontally is a pain. Finding that 'one spot' fat measure location is kind of tough to do.

I got them off of Amazon. They are called "Slim Guide Skinfold Caliper". They are much larger in size than I was expecting. I kinda chuckled when I opened them and they were bigger than my face! LOL I did use the scooby calculator. I didn't have time to measure again lost night. I'll try the belly button area like you suggested, that would be a good way to get the same spot each time. I'm trying to find a mole or something on my thigh to mark the same spot.
