MrsTofu's Journal, 26 February 2014

So two days ago I wrote about how I was excited with my progress (measurements from four days prior). I was amazed by the comp breakdown of my losses. However, I peaked at the scale again after writing that entry and saw it said my weight was up around 148. I tried the Omron and it registered 26% BF (1-2 ays ago). It occurred to me that I was right to be incredulous before. That was a bit discouraging to realize that my "progress" may have been more related to limitations in accuracy for the device than actual fat loss.

In the interest of scientific research (and potential ego boosting) I took measurements again today with both my scale and the Omron. I do multiple readings to try and see the trends more accurately. Weight was registering back at 144, and at one point the Omron said BMI and BF% were the same- which is cool since that makes it easier to remember, 24.3.

Now I KNOW that the evidence that I gained and lost 2% body fat and 4lb overall in less than a week is either A) a reflection of my normal daily fluctuations, B) a side effect of the imprecision of my equipment (not that I'd really go out and buy something new to hone in on the correct data), or C) some combination of those two factors.

What I found intriguing/ annoying is how much I bank my emotions on the outcome- which I realize is idiotic, especially when the information can be misleading. Until I'm confronted with the experience I do not understand accurately how it will affect me. This is a sobering reminder of how I need to not allow my emotions to govern my behavior. Easier said than done, but I am at least grateful for the revelation that my progress is steady, if not necessarily as dramatic as I had previously thought.

*Edited to clarify timing/ sequence of the past few days.*

Good observation. Weight is not the same as lean mass. I go three ways. Scale, measurement, and calipers. They're all off to some degree. Sometimes I saw a scale loss while the measurements stayed the same. Sometimes calipers said my body fat had fallen while the scale said I was the same. At some point you have to simply like what you see in the mirror.

Thanks! For the most part I do already (depends on what kind of clothing, if any, I have on when looking in the mirror). I have calipers and have done the skin fold measurements before a WHILE ago (pre- recent pregnancy, so at least a year ago). I should try that again, it'd be interesting to see where the greatest changes are. DH helps me do it as I have trouble doing it with consistent results.
