Exercised today a mile with the dog. It wasn't bitter cold out. She is going to get me out as she needs a long walk every day - and once the weather gets better we can go on long walks once a day. I'll gradually work her up to it as animal control said she was sedentary. Like every dog she loves the outdoors. Already the first day and I feel I'll want to get out and walk - who wants to walk alone? It's not much fun. But when you have a dog it sure makes it much better and the dog needs it too to stay healthy. She needs to lose about eight pounds - she's twenty three or so now. She's not fat really but big and just needs to trim down. She's not eating her dog food and I suppose was spoiled by her last owner as she is heavy - they told me to limit those 'treats' and it's best to give a treat of cheese or meat - a small bit as it is less calories and really healthier as she needs to lose weight. She is such a wonderful little animal and I am so attached already, I knew her but not well really. She is the perfect kind of animal everyone would want - she's excitable around lots of people so it is good I'm just one person by myself right now. I'm so happy I got her. Anyway, I know now I'll be getting out doing lots of exercising with her as long as she's in my life!

You sound really happy Glenn. Congrats! Enjoy your new family member. They are lots of work but so worth it. I think animal control gave you good advice about the table scraps. My Golden Retreiver only gets lean proteins. Plus, I give her 1 can of tuna in oil each week. It helps keep her coat healthy and shiny. I'd also suggest a good quality food. It will make clean up a whole lot easier...if you get my meaning :). Have fun with her.

I woke up in the night just now so I'm on the computer like last night I had trouble sleeping anyway, she went to bed and hopped right on to my bed when I went to get ready for sleep and is on top of the blankets. Dave was ill before he died for quite a while, but seemed happy. Now I know this loving dog was a big reason why. She seems like a picky eater so far. I have good food for her. The best thing is when I have the time and the weather is good she'll get me out there exercising. The animal control people also told me she was the best housebroken dog they had in the group there so that isn't going to be a problem. I may put Omega 3 in her food, I'll look it up on the Internet, squeeze a capsule in a day perhaps...

How wonderful for both of you to have each other. I agree with everyone, a good quality dog food is the best. You can find them at pet supply stores. They eat much less of it because it has the good stuff in it, so it is not more expensive than cheap food in the long run and their stools are better to clean up, their health is better. I have a little 16 pounder, I live in IA, I am cold blooded so I trained her to get on the treadmill with me. She loves it, and is up to 25 minutes now. You sound like a good dog owner, trying to learn about your new dog, finding ways to deal with past habits. She is having to live without her past owner, she misses him, and that is hard for her but she will adjust. They are so much fun and give so much joy. Mine also sleeps in my bed with me. The Dog Whisper and Its Me Or The Dog are both on basic cable and they are amazing programs. Mine was adopted from the Humane Society, she is 3-4 years old so I had to train her in some ways and those programs are wonderful. Good luck.

That is so great Glenn. I am really happy for you. I can hear the joy you have found in your new little companion. That is some very smart things you are doing working her up to a longer walk and limiting the treats. It is so easy to spoil an animal that makes us happy. She sounds like she has found just the right person to take care of her. :)
