nbjb1957's Journal, 18 February 2007

I have been going just over 4.5 weeks now and have appreciated some of the comments/feedback.

I recommend that people read a recent Scientific American Reports magazine on "Eating to Live" Vol 16, No. 4 2006 which has a range of articles on diet, food pyramid, drink, health, aging, obesity, longevity.

I have noticed that the most noticeable weight loss has been around the waist line and I have had to add more holes to my belts...

Have increased daily walking from 60 to 75 minutes and where possible doing more physical work like in the garden. I have noticed you get a big drop in weight after exercising because of dehyration, but weight is gained after taking on water during the day - but hopefully you have burnt a few calories throgh the conversion of body fat!!!!!.

Still having two meals per day a cooked breakfast (egg, bacon, tomatoes and mushroom) and dinner (eye fillet steak/fish/chicken/salmon/tuna) and salad (lettuce cucumber, tomatoes, carrot, spring onions, small sprinkling of cheese) with essentially all carbs cut out. I think the big thing for me is the feeling that my stomach is full. If I am tempted for sweet things during the day I use low carb chewing gum which acts as a distraction (PS - I don't smoke).

However, I am still tempted with chips and small snacks late at night watching TV or reading.

I figure as long as you are loosing some weight in a given one week period, however small, you are making positive progress. You also have to give yourself some food pleasures once in a while and a minor binge may be called for (you can always exercise it off).

Once you have reached your target weight you should be seeking a balanced diet with exercise.

223.5 lb Lost so far: 19.0 lb.    Still to go: 25.1 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.
losing 3.5 lb a week

Good journal, lots of good points. I've been off the wagon for a week now, but i'm jumping back on today. Reading your journal this morning has helped me feel more determined!

Depriving yourself of a small snack isn't always good since you are only eating twice a day. If you read in the new ATKINS diet Revolution, He tells you to not concentrate on the "3" meals a day thing. We need to get that out of our heads and concentrate on maybe 5 mini meals a day. One reason for this is your metabolism. Your metabolism will have a hard time speeding up on two meals a day and nothing else. This has been a major issue for me as well. Not eating enough in the day and only eating one or two big meals for myself. I am finding out it to be true, that if you split up your meals and have a small snack during those times when you may just want a little something, it helps you not to crave bad things and my weight loss increases for the week. Atkins has several snacks that are low carb in his book that you may want to try. if you feel a little hungry or want a snack, then you should eat a little bit of something and satisfy that craving. Just do it with something good like a few cubes of cheddar cheese, or pepperoni slices, or a mozzerella cheese stick, or a half of a deviled egg. One of my favorites is bacon wrapped swiss cheese. (thats in his book) you wrap the bacon around a cube of swiss cheese and stick it in hot oil and cook it until the bacon is crispy. cheese is melty and gooey, but it's really good. pork rinds is another freebee. You can get them in plain or spicy/bbq. or a handful of almonds. the salty ones will help with the salt cravings. :) You are doing wonderful! Just dont want a buddy to be hungry! You are allowed to eat if it's the right kind of foods for your diet. :) Keep up the great work! Just dont feel guilty if you need that tiny snack with your book. It's okay! :)
