TXSnowman's Journal, 18 January 2014

Was sick last night. Seems like it was just Cedar Allergies. Lethargic and sick to my stomach. Woke up after 5 1/2 hours of sleep feeling better, but still feeling puny. After 45 min on the stair master, I felt much improved, so I did 20 min of yoga and worked out on the Wii Fit Plus. Now I'm at work until 5 pm and feel sleepy. Now that my staff has arrived, I think I'll head out for an hour or so on my bike and call it lunch. Hope to get home early enough to run the dogs tonight. They are getting grumpy about me leaving them so much.

Saw my doctor yesterday. First time in seven months. She was very pleased that I had decided to lose weight and get into shape. I've lost over 140 pounds in the intervening 7 months and she wants to make me her "Poster Child". My bp was awesome at 125/68 and most of my blood tests were very good. My thyroid is still a bit sluggish, so she increased my thyroid meds dosage by 50%. My triglycerides and HDL is great, but my LDL number was much too high in her opinion. However, the test didn't differentiate between LDL & VLDL and I'm not convinced that I have a problem. Several studies, including some very good ones out of Texas A&M have shown that when you lose weight and gain muscle, your LDL numbers will be higher, because these Lipoproteins are necessary to transport cholesterol in order to build and repair cells. Anyhow, she wants to do another blood workup in a month. We can argue about my LDL at that time. I think that I'll request that a more detailed blood test this time.

WTG POSTER CHILD! Thanks for your advice on my journal - also just tried my new chia seeds on my yogurt for breakfast. Hope you're feeling better shortly. Have a great weekend!

oh!good number on the blood pressure. Be careful working out when you're sick. I used to do it and my dad always said being sick is your body giving you a sign it needs a break...but if you felt better it's ok, so long as you don't push to hard. Get well soon!

Thanks Jenfar. Got some good fresh air on a 10 mile bike ride at lunch and feel much better (and more awake). I'm hopeful that it was just seasonal allergies. While there is a mini-epidemic of H1N1 flu going around, my symptoms were very much in line with those of Cedar Pollen. The weather today is criminally nice :) Sunny and 70. Doesn't feel much like winter today. Much more like a somewhat blustery spring day. Really looking forward to having the day off tomorrow. The weather is supposed to be beautiful and I'll be able to run the dogs for a few hours before my daughter and her family comes over to bbq and watch the football games. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Thanks Bill. I think I'm going to have to call her next week. She had me stop the diuretic that I've been on for 15 years or so and my lower legs are swelled up something fierce. I checked the Tanita and punched the numbers into my spreadsheet. My body fat percentage dropped from 16.6% to 16.2%, but my water percent rose to 61.1%. That's an increase of 4.4 lbs of water weight. By coincidence, my weight is up 4.0 lbs. So the good news is that I'm losing body fat. The bad news is, I need to do something about the water retention. I think I still have a pill or two left to get through the weekend, but I'm definitely planning on getting a refill next week. I hope that your Mexican lunch and Movie went well. I just got home from running the dogs. Now its time for a little dinner, then I can do my core workout and hit the hay.

Your weather today sounds beautiful. So glad you feel better now. Maybe you picked up a bug at the doctors? I agree about your LDL numbers. Hope you got the dogs out for a run. Have a great evening.

I control water weight with Alfalfa Tabs. Alfalfa is a natural diuretic and Two a day at 430mg does the trick for me. As the warning label reads, always check with your Dr. before taking vitamins or supplements! Just saying what works for me. Have a great day all!

Thank M2B. I did get the dogs out. It was a little late and we did most of the walk in the starlight (I forgot to bring a flashlight and the dog collar with the flashing lights). But the weather was really pleasant, with no wind and temps in the upper 50's. We live far from any town, the homes out here are few and far between (mostly sporadic cattle ranches) so not many vehicles come by. I find it very relaxing walking at night with nothing but starlight or moonlight to show the way.

Hoffner, I will definitely try the Alfalfa Tabs. I'll pick some up when I get to town next weekend. I'm sure that GNC or Whole Foods will have them. Thanks very much for the tip.

TXSnowman, the only place I have found them is Whole Foods. The brand that I like the best is Solary. Good luck and once again if you have health issues, be sure supplements are OK to take. I always worry when I make suggestions, but I have taken them for years with no side effects. The walk with your dogs sounds delightful. Have a wonderful day.
