Dulce1984's Journal, 24 September 2008

Today was another great day on Atkins. For breakfast I had two deviled eggs, a slice of american cheese, and a serving of vienna sausages with two cups of water. For lunch I made a salad with baby spinach, chicken breast slices, ham, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, and ranch dressing with another two cups of water. For dinner I had some more baby spinach, some italian salami and provolone cheese with three cups of water. I've been doing great all week with the diet and I've eliminated the Atkins products but I weighed myself this morning and I am still the same weight. I don't know maybe I am weighing myself too early but I was hoping to see at least a half a pound loss. I'm going to try to not stress about it and give it some more time. I still have four more days. I've been doing some research on stalling on Atkins and one website talked about lowering my caloric intake while on Atkins to break through the stall and another talked about going off the diet for a few days and then going back on to shock the body and restart induction. It didn't say go out and eat cake, pizza, french fries, cookies and ice cream. It just said to eat some whole grains and fruit and up the carb intake to switch the body back to carbohydrate burning for a few days then switching back to low carbohydrate to restart the induction process and break through the plateau. I wanted to know if any one has ever done this and if it was successful in breaking through stalls. Also if any one has any advice as well it would be greatly appreciated. I'm eating right now all of the same things I was eating when I was losing weight but it seems that my body is now accustomed to it or something, I don't know. Just hoping to see some result at the end of the week no matter how small the loss is, I'll be happy......

Personally, I've tried going off of Atkins for a few days. But going back through the cravings and then sugar withdrawl was pure hell!!! I don't want to do that again! What has worked for me in the past has been 1)cutting out the convenience products - especially those with artifical sweetners (which you've already done) 2)cutting back on bacon - because I tend to eat a lot of it!! (ha!) and 3)cutting back on my cheese consumption. Those are what works for me. I guess you have to find what works for you. I have to say though - I'd give it a week with the changes you've made. And then reanalyze it after the week is over if it doesn't work. Stalls are a normal part of the process - as frustrating as that seems! You are doing great! Just stay off that scale until the end of the week!!! ;)

I haven't "officially" tried it, but one time I was in a middle of a stall and had a planned cheat meal (one meal with a burger on whole grain bread and a potato) and the next week I lost 2-3 lbs. I wouldn't recommend it and don't weigh yourself the day after, but it could kick-start your metabolism. However it could also make you gain, and like Paige said, it will send you craving again. According to the Atkins book a "stall" is no loss for a month. I would recommend to be patient and wait it out before doing anything drastic. You can look at caloric intake but not enough calories can have the same effect as too many. Make sure you research what your basal metabolic rate is and not go too far below that as this is not a starvation diet. Cutting back on dairy helps me for the short term, I have yet to see about long-term. Personally I would just wait if I were you. This is coming from the self-proclaimed queen of stalls. For me it drops off after prolonged stalls. The good news is that the slower you lose it the less likely you are to gain it back. :)

It took me like 6 months to lose 25 pounds - but it's off for good - I'm making certain it doesn't return. My niece - who just had her fourth baby - does Atkins to get back in shape. She does a cheat day every couple of weeks or so when stalled with success. But I found less success with the cheating than she did. Sara is right - be careful. I'm craving I think from eating just some peanuts as they had more carbs in them than regular no carb food! BE Cautious!!!

Thanks for all of the advice and ideas. I'm glad you mentioned the cheese Paige because I see that I eat a lot of cheese. More than 3 to 4 ounces, so I am going to try to cut back. I had a cheat meal a few weeks ago before I joined FS. I ate BBQ and cake and showed a slight gain in the scale but the week after I showed 4-5 lb loss. It wasn't too hard for me to get back on track. But I remember feeling crappy and having a huge headache after the two slices of super sugary cake I ate. I will try that as my last option if the scales don't budge in a few weeks. First I'm going to try to cut back in cheese and maybe eat 5-6 mini meals throughout the day instead of 3 big ones.....We'll see how it goes! Thanks again guys....

I looked up carb cycling because of your question. I ran across an interesting forum post. I messaged it to you and Paige. If anyone else wants it let me know. I am considering it now too.
