I don't understand how this is possible, considering by my calculations, I should have lost a pound and a half. maybe it's muscle?

Well, you can do everything right and still see a gain sometimes. Losing weight isn't an exact science and based on many things (not just calories in/calories burned). If you just started an exercise plan, your muscles retain water (they get little tears and water replaces to help them heal). It can show on the scale as a temporary gain. Other things can cause a gain too. Stay on your plan. Drink plenty of water and keep going.
