suechru's Journal, 18 August 2010

Holy crap, I just completed the medium level workout on my 30 Day Challenge (EA Sports Active for those of you not following along.) I was winded at parts of it but I did it and I'm realizing I'm able to keep up the running in place a lot (or more like jogging for me) a lot better than I was on Monday. My legs kinda felt like lead towards the end from the running, lunges and high knees but the workout is nicely mixed with upper and lower body stuff (like resistance arm curls) so I got to catch my breath a little.

I am SO glad I had a snack before I even tried that. I came home from work today starving. Actually, scratch that, I was starving since 3:30 pm and didn't have a snack on me or any good options in the vending machines so I had to wait until I got home (a little after 5). I'm not hungry much these days and I did add a small snack to the morning but I don't think my lunch was big enough or I was hungry again or something. All I know is that by 4 pm I was extremely grumpy and in a bad mood. I didn't realize before how quickly being hungry can put you in a bad mood - no wonder so many people on this website seem so grumpy all the time.

Seriously though, it made me realize that I probably need a 3:30ish snack every day (I had a small one at 11 because I've been finding myself famished by lunch time.) Going to have to load my bag up more for tomorrow. Has anyone found over time they need to eat more frequently or is this just a side result of my metabolism picking up?

Aside from the food thing, I find I'm a lot clearer mentally these days at work with the healthier food and taking the stairs. Both seem to shake away the fogginess I sometimes get from staring at a computer screen for 8 hours a day (in a room with no windows.) Coupled with getting away from my department on lunch (outside preferably) and I'm actually a pretty calm happy person to be around - except when I'm hungry like I was today, lol.

5.1 lbs until I reach goal #1 and the new iPod! This morning was a really pleasant surprise - I'm down 20lbs in a little over a month (okay 19.9 if you want to be technical). That's really freaking impressive for me.

Straying back to the topic of metabolism above, I wonder if I've finally boosted mine with all the muscles that seem to be popping out on me and being about 1000x more active than I used to be. Which reminds me I really need to pick up a bike rack in the next few weeks - I want to go riding on one of the trails/parks here (not sure if I'm up for that yet but I probably will be soon) and I need a way to get the bike there.

A little less than 20 in the actual month since I started on July 12th and today's August 18th. I think it was something like 17 or something in the actual month but it was also TOM for me which is when I bloat. I went from mostly sitting on my couch all day (literally - I was unemployed) to doing actual workouts about 5 days a week (on average), parking further when I go places and taking the stairs at work (once I got the job.) The amazing thing is that I didn't starve myself. I ate meals, I ate snacks, I had wine, I had chocolate, I even had ice cream (a few times in fact). My choices have gotten healthier but that's mainly because I'm trying to not put a load of processed crap into my body. I pretty much cut out fast food completely when I used to live on that stuff (watching Super Size Me helped a lot with that.)

Oh, I should point out that the week I started the new job I didn't exercise much (like maybe twice max) but most weeks I do five days of SOMETHING. It's varied - cycling, walking, DDR, wii fit, EA Sports Active (the latest addiction, lol), hiking, etc. I try to be outside when the weather's nice but this summer's been really hot and the non hot days have had a lot of storms recently.

Yeah, the question is now when I "go public" with things. I mean, you guys here obviously know and a few of my close friends do but I didn't want to throw it out there when I lost only like 5 lbs or something. On the other hand keeping things secret just reeks of an eating disorder in my mind so I've been trying to strike a balance. Plus, I'm kind of waiting to see if anyone notices, which I doubt they will until I lose another ten minimum.

Great weight loss! Your instinct about spreading out more snacks is spot on. You burn more effectively when you eat more smaller meals. It's especially helpful to have a lite snack before workout. The additional calories will boost your metabolism and make your workout more effective.
