Kathy Bernard's Journal, 22 March 2013

March 22, 2013

In September/October I made up my mind that I was going to do everything I could to avoid a seasonal depression (which often hit me in Oct./November) and normally preceded a long New England winter of indoor laziness. I wanted to get more active (in addition to frequent kayaking and occasional hiking), and wanted to avoid gaining 15 lbs over the winter. I wanted to join the gym, but was afraid I wouldn't stay committed, so started with more frequent walk/jogs, floor exercises, even crunches in the car while driving, or standing crunches while brushing my teeth. Basically just making myself aware that every little bit would help, even if only 30 reps here, 30 reps there. Within just a couple weeks people noticed that I seemed to have a glow and was looking good. I wasn't super fat to begin with, but had a lot of fat I wanted to rid myself of.
The compliments and attention of course made me want to do even better. I'd been hovering around 140-146 for a couple years, but had been as high as 158-162 about 6-7 yrs ago. I suddenly lost about 8 lbs. Before this, in 2010 I was diagnosed at a young age with breast cancer - common in my family. I opted for a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, even though the doctors thought it was unnecessary, but I had my reasons with my family history. Barely 24 months later I was feeling really good about my self-image, and about being a survivor. It makes you think "if this were my last year to live, what would I want to do/be/look like/take advantage of" while I have the chance.
December 5 I joined the gym and began doing lots of different machines, cardio, free weights, etc. By Christmas just 3 weeks later I was thrilled with the difference in my body. It's now been just over 3 months, I've lost close to 25 lbs, have developed abs for the first time in my life (still have a way to go though) and feel as though I'm at a plateau, despite being down to 128 on a good day, about 131/132 on a 'normal' day. I want to conquer the plateau, and continue firming and shaping my butt, thighs and abs. My arms have nice definition now, I go to the gym nearly every day. I hope to have a great summer feeling and looking great in a bikini! It feels good to have people notice, and that they, too are inspired by the changes I made in such a short time.
