Lorir321's Journal, 12 September 2007

I'm trying to keep my chin up...but I really thought that I would be @ 140 by the end of the week. For some strange reason, even though I did not cheat or went off the diet, I gained a pound (went from 141.6 to 142.6)uggg. I just don't get it. I see people who don't even exercise lose weight not gain. I exercise 4 times a week at the gym. I know its going to be water weight, but my clothes aren't fitting better so I can't even feel good about inches. This is so discouraging. I would understand if I had a beer, or some bread or SOMETHING...but I've stuck to what I should be doing...and here I am...1 pound heavier.

Gosh I sound like such a Wendy Winer. Hate being like that. Anyway, I'm hungry and a little woozy anyway after work while working out so I don't want to restrict my calories even more. Not sure if I should see a nutritionist...or go to GNC or something.

I'll continue with everything, but I just feel crappy...

Lori, The reason you are gaining is because you are adding muscle. Don't worry too much about it. It will be hard to lose much if you are working out...you need to take maybe a new measure of if you fit in your clothes that you want to wear. The muscle is what is adding the pounds. Try on those clothes you were excited to wear, see if they are fitting yet!!! You are doing great!!!

Hi Lori, You have lost 5 pounds a month, that is no small accomplishment. I think you are doing just fine, it just sounds that you may be looking at things a little too closely. I go up and down several pounds a week, that is normal, and as you said probably due to fluctuations in water retention. Ultimately, any diet usually boils down to the bottom line which is: (how many calories came in) - (how many calories went out) = weight loss/gain for the day. As long as you are not kidding yourself about how much you are eating, if you are burning up more calories than you lose, *in time* it will show up on the scale as a steady loss. It has already been mentioned that muscle weighs five time what fat weighs, so when you are exercising hard, this must be taken into consideration and must be added to the above results. Again, you seem to be doing fine to me. Keep it up and don't despair!
