Today I spoke to one of my friends who bought the new Atkins book and who was going to try Atkins. She asked me how long you could stay on low carb and wasn't it bad to stay on low carb a long time. I told her Atkins was designed to stay on for life. She was still hesitant. Obviously Atkins badmouthers had been harrassing her about going on our food plan. Well it doesn't matter to me one way or the other what she does but it does make me angry that people can't mind their own business and have to talk others out of a perfectly healthy food plan that I know could definitely help this woman who is prediabetic. The last thing she said to me was that she had to decide whether she wanted to stay on the food plan she was on and lose slowly (I don't know exactly what she eats because I have never asked her or tried to talk her into going on Atkins. I only answered questions about Atkins that she asked me.) or go on Atkins and lose quickly. Well that sounded so funny to me I almost laughed. Gee what do I want to do lose slowly or quickly (as long as the food plans are healthy)? I didn't say anything else to her because it is her decision whatever food plan she wants to choose. It is interesting though I have never run into any Atkins person that has tried to talk some other kind dieter into feeling their food plan is unhealthy. Why do people have to rag on Atkins? We have the right to eat however we want to eat. We're not trying to force Atkins down everyone's throat. The only time it is mentioned is when people ask me how I lost my weight. I say Atkins and that is it unless they choose to ask me questions which I try to answer the best I can.
Anyway enough on that...Today I went and shopped for a dress for my vow renewal which I was kind of dreading because seeing myself in those huge mirrors has not been my favorite activity in the past. Well today I was surprised to find that not only could I fit into size 18's but I could even fit into some size 16's which thrilled me. I didn't look terrible - not wonderful yet because I am still 216.9 lb but not terrible. In fact I didn't hate looking at myself in the mirror. I found a dress for the vow renewal. It is turquoise flower print filmy long and dainty and springy. Size 18. The other thing I talked about with my best friend who is a size 6 is how the shopping experience is different for a larger sized woman. She can wear almost anything in the stores she goes into which means she takes hours choosing what she buys. I told her that as a larger size woman most stores probably don't have 20 outfits that would look good on me so it took me only an hour to shop. It was funny really. She was amazed when I tried on everything that was half way decent and was done in an hour. I guess as I lose weight I'll take longer shopping. It was a fun day especially when I met my friends for dinner and several of them kept raving that I was just shrinking away! I did skip lunch today because we only had an hour to find a dress or eat and what a surprise I chose to shop instead of eat. It isn't good to skip meals though and I almost never do it. But today it was worth it. Now I will have a late meal and finish posting on my buddies journals. Have a great evening!

Absolutely Andrea. There are SO few things to buy when you're large. I can't believe the fashion industry is so dense. We don't like neon clothing, large colorful flowers (especially if they look suspiciously like drapery material) or horizontal stripes. Well, at least most of us don't care for these items. On the upside, we'll be shopping in the smaller sections soon. But hey! You already are! WOOOT

Oh, Andrea! Congratulations on fitting into 18's AND some 16's! That's wonderful. I hope this vow renewal is soon, otherwise you're going to need to have your dress altered! Seems that when you're between sizes, that next size is just around the corner. You must be proud of yourself! I hope so : )

Andrea, I agree with everything you said about our WOE! People have all these preconceived ideas about Atkins, that have been perpetuated by the ignorance of doctors and industries that don't want the general public to know the truth, because it would stymie the diet industry, grain industry, pharmaceutical industry, and sugar industry, just to name a few. I tell people what diet I am on, and often get the same tired "Oh tht's bad for you" How is it bad for me to eat meat, vegetables, and fats??? It's bad for me to give up sugar, breads, cereals, soda, cake, candy, all the high sugar, empty carb foods that are pushed on us? I don't think so!! I am healthier on this WOE than on any other eating plan, and that includes low calorie and low fat. Been there, done that and I was tired, didn't lose any weight, my Lupus was in full flare most of the time, and my intestinal problems were out of control. Atkins WOE changed all of that, and a wonderful by product of eating this way is I lose weight, lots of weight. And what the heck is wrong with that???? As for your shopping trip, I am sooooo happy for you. Feels so good, doesn't it? Must be the week for finding out that shopping can be fun!!! I know you are going to look beautiful for your vow renewal. Please post a picture in your new dress, I would love to see it.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on other people's perception of Atkins. The only thing I'd say to her is that its not about loosing weight slowly or quickly, its about regulating your blood sugar so that you DON'T get Diabetes...and since most other diet plans rely on carbs, she isn't going to be able to lower her blood sugar on them.

People disbelieve in things they know nothing about. There was so much negative attention when this WOE first began and unless someone has done Atkins they don't understand how healthy it really CAN be. The problem is that too many people think it's just meat, eggs, and cheese. They forget about the whole healty foods we eat as well. It's funny that people can accept it if you tell them you are on a whole foods/low carb diet as opposed to Atkins. Through our success they will realize how healthy it can be. Kudos on the shopping and the dress - your doing a wonderful job.

I used to get alot of grief over doing Atkins. It seems that more and more people are starting to understand it. The people who what to go on Atkins to lose a bunch of weight and quit are in for a rude awakening. Tell her to just read the book and read the testimonials in there on the health improvements in people who have done the diet. Your health has improved so that should tell her something. Congrats on the new dress. I can't wait till I can buy a smaller size!!! Yes, please do post a picture.

I hear you Andrea about shopping for clothes in the "PLUS" section. Most of them have large flowers, poka dots..stripes (horizontal) and you look like a dam armchair when your finished...what does any chunky women want with prints as big as breadbox..lol. I am glad you found a sweet dainty dress for your vow renewal, you will look awesome. :)
