I ate some carbs for the first time that weren't "cheating" since I began the diet in October. To clarify - my friends all ordered Chinese food. I got shrimp and veggies. Also I finally ate about 6 to 8 tablespoons of brown rice. I suppose if I do this a few times a week or once a week it'll help reintroduce carbs that I'll need to eat as I have not eaten low carb pasta or any carb foods really since being on the diet. The arthritis eased up today - we had wicked rain here in western Massachusetts on Friday and Saturday, and to top it off it was cold. Thursday, Friday and Saturday my arthritis pain was brutal so I know that I need to lose as much weight as possible despite being 6'3" tall and the 180s is reasonable - but maybe I should go slowly the rest of the way to get there and by re-introducing carbs slowly as I begin to go on long walks once the weather warms up and that too will help. I realize I can't do this next to nothing no carbs eating permanently - but need to incorporate healthy carbs now as I'm 10 to 20 pounds or so from my goal weight, which I still am not certain of. I have to find out in the next month or two what my maintenance carb intake is going to be so that I don't keep losing weight down the road long-term. I'm not too keen on low carb pastas because of taste - or sugar, so I know I can stay away from certain foods. I know perhaps a little brown rice might be the ticket for me as it's healthy and wheat bread doesn't seem to agree with me too much. For now I'll just have to slowly try different things and see what my metabolism can take... :)

OK, I'm finally going to stick my neck out and hope nobody chops my head off. I've lost over 40 pounds on Atkins and now I can say I've kept it off for seven years -- because I'm at my goal weight. I use carb blockers when I know I'm going to eat a meal that is loaded with carbs -- like spaghetti or baked potato. Most of the time I don't use them, but they are my safety net. Taking two capsules blocks 30 carbs. You can't just go crazy and take these and expect them to save you, but for the occasional splurge, it can save a week of getting back into ketosis. I now buy Natrol Carb Intercept, 120 capsules per bottle, for $17.25 at bodybuilding.com. This is half the price of Hi Health or other stores like that. Hope this helps!

Have you ever tried quinoa? It is a high protein grain. It has more protein than legumes and it is a complete protein. Gluten free too. It is actually not technically a "grain" but a grain-like seed. If you do try it, make sure to soak it and discard the water before you cook it because otherwise it tastes bitter. It has a great flavor and I think you might like it as an alternative side-dish. I have also had amaranth and millet, but quinoa (pronounced "keen-wah") is my favorite. I like it even better than rice.

As far as carb-blockers, make sure there are no contraindications with other medications you are taking. I don't agree with them any more than I agree with the use of Alli. That is just my opinion, though.

Thanks for the input on carb-blockers gramnbear and sararay - I don't think I'll try them until I'm at my goal weight though. For now I think I can manage by not cheating - I think I'll have enough trouble maintaining my weight as it is probably as I will strictly follow Atkins for life down the road... :)
