How to politely decline cake?

Going to a friends house for a birthday dinner this evening. They are doing super casual, hamburgers & hotdogs. I'm good with that, no buns. Pickles are fine, little ketchup. (can I bring my own food; is that weird?).

But I'm SURE there will be cake. And it'll be homemade cake. And it will be amazing. I am SURE I am addicted to sugar, and even a little bit causes a cascade effect that I feel powerless to stop. I'm down 11+ lbs... do I say "I've been doing good, I deserve a treat", OR "no thank you". Then there is the social aspect, if everyone else is eating it, can I just have a spoonful or do I abstain completely? This is the problem every person who is trying to change their eating habits has. I'm good at work, I'm good at home, but going out is REALLY HARD. Even going out to a restaurant isn't so difficult on low carb. But someone else's home, for a social gathering... UGH.

I am an addict, I cannot have a little. I will politely decline.

I remember bringing my own food to parties.....don't be that person. That was when I believed the myths. Forgoing buns is another no no in my opinion. It's about calories at the end of the day the 120 calories in a bun are not going to break the bank...

I agree that it's nice to splurge, but if you have an addictive personality, as I do, once you start it is hard to stop. I can not drink alcohol for this reason. I have to politely smile and say no. When people ask why, I tell them the truth. It's fine for some, but not good for all. People often go on about "in moderation". That just does not work for me. It creates an unmanageable habit that brings great depression and sadness in my life and others. I understand it. Even last night I ate something sweet, then just got such cravings that I made a sandwich at midnight, undoing the good I had done during the day. Do what is right for you.

I've heard that refined sugar is so... well, refined, that it's basically a drug to our systems. That means you really can become addicted! You might want to consider sticking to a more whole form of sugar if you're still eating some (sounds like you're going low carb), such as raw or Organic.

Way to go on the willpower. That's a hard one. For future reference, I've found that if you really want to have the cake, take a smaller piece and don't eat the frosting.
