Greetings Best Buddies!
Doesn't it seem like August is just flying by us? The Idiot Box showed some downward movement yesterday - but I usually wait for a consistent weight before I log it.
So, here is one of my pet peeves - when people say, "Muscle weighs more than Fat." Why do people say that? It is not true. Muscle is more dense and compact than fat - but one pound equals one pound! LOL!
We can look smaller and lose inches when we build muscle; and wear smaller clothes...but our muscle tissue does not weigh differently than our fat tissue. Help me understand why people say it! It makes me laugh.
Words of the Week: "I will never, never, never give up. I will be a pillar of bad-ass calm!" I am dedicated, determined and diligent.

Maybe they should clarify that the same volume of muscle weighs more than the same volume of fat.

LOL, WFN - that makes sense. The same volume area of fat vs. muscle could be it...but I doubt that is what people mean!!! They often say it when they show a gain on the scale...

Lots of "old wives tales" when it comes to weight loss. But you are looking good. Flaunt those muscles no matter how much they weigh.

If you cut a 4 x 4 x 4 inch cube of your fat out, and did the same with your muscle, and you weighed both, the muscle would weigh more. The saying is pointing out when you compare the same volume of the two substances, the muscle weighs more. Hope that helps.

I've never understood why people say muscle weighs more than fat. Can the muscles be smaller or smoother though?

lol, they need to say "Muscle is less Volumetric than fat", but that's not 'catchy' enough and causes you to think about what you're saying.

Per volume muscle weighs more than fat. Meanwhile, what's heavier, a ton of granite or a ton of feathers?

Actually if you look in my journal, I posted a while ago a photo that shows exactly how much volume muscle and fat "occupy" for the same weight.

Muscle is more dense than fat is the correct statement. I think people confuse density with weight.

I understand why people say it - I was being rhetorical !
|
They say it because that is what they have heard. a pound is a pound is a pound and your right they are all different perhaps in size and volume. Have a great Friday enjoy the rest of August because winter will be here before you know it.

And because of that, by volume, muscle weighs more than fat. You are a trip!

Its not wrong to say it, its just better to say "by volume" but generally people don't bother. But if you have been doing exercise then you will be building muscle, and so you will possibly weigh more, and that isn't fat, so not a bad thing. After all, you will be slimmer but more dense.....
