It's amazing what you can eat when you don't overeat! I've been on Phase 2 of South Beach instead of Phase 1 so I could incorporate 1/4-1/2 cup of brown rice, etc...in my plan because I am running low on migraine medicine. I have migraines quite often and there are things I can do to improve that, like not being drastic and cutting out all carbs, or over exercising...I've found that I'm an ALL OR NONE person and I'm trying to be a BALANCED AND MAKING PROGRESS person. My daughter loves turtles and I need to be steady like a turtle to win this race. I have to admit that learning this website filled my need to "do something NOW" towards my goal and it's the first thing I ran to do this morning. But, I acknowledged it and try to only go on FS to log my food, write in my journal, and my goal next week is to log my weight on Monday, not every day.

I saw what happened when I found FS and was MIA for a few days, I didn't gain weight, but it's not because I was planning my food, so it could have gone bad. I've done South Beach successfully before in February 2005. By July 2005 I was at a good weight and I thought I had it all figured out and would never gain weight again. By the end of 2006, my weight started slowly coming back because instead of going onto Phase 3 maintenance, I slowly returned to eating like I used to. Slowly so I didn't feel the change...but eventually all the weight came back and I held onto it for the past 8 years. (I know I'm repeating myself for a previous post, but until I own it, I have to write it down.)

This week for the first time I measured and counted calories while following Phase 2 (from memory) of South Beach. It really is so simple to follow. I never measured a thing before, and by leaving out the bad carbs, I could eat until I was satisfied and lost an average of 2 pounds per week. (I faithfully wrote my weight loss on a little scratch pad for 6 months.) Since I'm doing a 20 pounds in 30 days challenge, I'm really watching my portions and counting calories for the first time because I want to lose some weight fast to gain momentum for the next 6 months (and it's working). I'm thrilled with losing 6 pounds and my goal is to lose 2 or 3 MORE pounds this week. NOT the same pounds over and over and over and over...

If I lose 3 pounds, I'll be in the 170's next Monday. Maybe that should be my goal! I just told my best friend about FS. She sent me a text to see how I was doing, I called and was so happy to have lost 6 pounds with a PLAN to lose more "additional" pounds this week!

Make it simple. If you have to go to a restaurant, Order an omelette with nothing on the side that you're not supposed to eat. Eventually, you'll be taking half of the omelette home! Bad carbs = bad urges to eat. When the urges are gone, you're willpower is just FINE! (Don't we always say, "I have no willpower"? Well from what I've read and experienced, we have great willpower, but the chemical reaction that happens when we ingest bad carbs makes us out of control with crazy urges to eat and then keep eating. Give yourself a chance, eat a lot of the good foods and leave out the white stuff (hidden sugar, sugar, white flour, white bread, white rice)...and while I'm at it, who came up with putting sugar in SALSA???? Read your labels. I grabbed a Safeway brand salsa because it looked the same as the Casa Sanchez brand the I know is safe, but in 2 tbsp., it has an extra gram of carbs and sugar! In just 2 tbsp.! It's not that the calories are more, they are the same. What I'm trying to say is that WHITE STUFF = URGES TO EAT. Try it, and please don't tell me if it doesn't work, I'm only talking to the person that wants to try things that work for sure for me and might work for them. So here it is....low carb eating for 2 weeks makes hunger pangs and the urge to eat go away!

I'm not going to proofread this or I might delete it because although I want to help others, I know others don't really want my help. So, this is for me, in case I forget again!

In 2005, I started the South Beach Diet after reading Phase 1 & 2 as fast as I could. My friends made it easier for me. "Order a Cesar Salad with chicken or shrimp, and don't eat the croutons." I didn't eat bread for a year! Unfortunately, I never looked at the maintenance part of the book (and it would have made a huge difference if I had!) So, once I ate my trigger foods, I continued on a downward spiral for 6 years. I've since read the maintenance section, just got to get there NOW. The plan works if you don't eat the white stuff (bread, sugar) but it's really not a diet, it's the opposite, it's "normal eating" and what I've been doing for 6 years is the "bad diet". Looking forward to not feeling the urge to eat because the "white stuff" does that to me. Without the URGES, using my willpower is much easier. Have a blessed day!
