is it better to accurately record fitness activities or false hope
Fatsecret does over estimate the calories on quite a few exercises. However, the activities like standing, sitting etc seem to be about right. If I add in the activities for a typical non-exercising day, it gives my requirement as 2500 kcal which is the accepted figure for an average male.
It way over estimates the energy cost of running and cycling. I had my VO2 max measured and therfore know pretty well how many calories I burn per mile of running and it ties in well with the equation kcal per mile = weight(kg)* 1.6. Fatsecret over estimates by a lot. It also gives big differences in the efficency of running at different speeds, which also isn't the case. Cycling isn't any better.
As a few people have said above, if you aren't losing weight at the rate you expected aim for a larger calorie differential.
I too think that the log is useful for tracking general activity. IN the winter, with the short days at 52 N, it is all too easy to sit around all evening, when in the summer I'd be out doing something active.

Running on a Treadmill vs. Outside
When you are starting out or recovering from an injury, running on the treadmill has two huge advantages over running outside. 1) if the injury hasn't recovered you can stop and you are back at base 2)any imbalance is easily spotted, e.g. if you tend to take a shorter stride with one leg you will find that you drift to one side or other of the treadmill, you just don't notice this running outside.
When fit running outside is more interesting and varied surfaces give your stability muscles more of a work out. Running through woodland is great as the changes in direction strengthen your ankles and develop core stability.
Now the health warning, don't jump into it running outside, you do use the muscles differently and you should build up gently.
