I have started my own rendition of the South Beach Diet. High Protein, Low Carbs. I don't generally have a problem following the diet plan, I generally love most of what I can eat, and I have no problem sticking to the plan. However, come the middle of the afternoon, nearly every single day, my blood sugar goes down the drain. I start feeling slow, and tired. I have a hard time focusing and I get really shaky. I know that its my blood sugar falling down too low, too fast, but I don't know how to keep those levels up without my carb count suffering. It only takes a couple mini snickers, or a handful of jelly belly's to get my sugar levels back to normal, but 2 mini snickers is over 11 carbs, and a jelly belly's are 1 carb per jelly bean. I'm not always prepared to let my diet suffer in that way.
I have tried a sugar alternative, stevia, however, that doesn't do the trick for my body. My tongue tells me its sweet, but my body tells me its not, so it doesn't do anything for my blood sugar. Everything I have looked into , i.e., fresh fruit, yogurts, sugar alternatives...the carbs are too high in all of them to be comfortable with for my diet.
I am wondering if this is going to be a necessary evil for me at this point, since I haven't been able to find a suitable alternative to keep my sugars up, but at the same time, keep my carbs down.
I even thought, that maybe if I keep the sugar levels consistent, like, eat a jelly bean every couple hours or so, maybe that would help maintain my levels, and I wouldn't have to overdo it when they do a drastic drop.
Any suggestions from anyone doing a similar diet would be greatly appreciated. Or even if you are not doing a similar diet, but you have an opinion or a view point from outside the box...I would appreciate any input at this time.
