19 April 2010

For almost a decade after college, I maintained the same weight (118, give or take two pounds) and was very comfortable and happy with it. However, over the last year I've been in a 9-5 office job for the first time, and being so sedentary has caused me to gradually gain 12 pounds. This means some of my favorite clothes don't fit, and that's not ok! Also, I wouldn't be surprised if my metabolism is a bit slower since I hit the big 3-0; it's a good time to focus on healthy habits. I know I used to be able to eat whatever crap I felt like and not gain weight, but I'm not 24 any more!

So. Five months ago I joined my local YMCA and have been faithfully going 5x a week. I've found classes I really like that I can go to after work. However, my weight hasn't budged. Maybe one hour of activity each evening isn't enough to offset all that sitting during the day, but I suspect the culprit is food rather than insufficient exercise.

I'm vegetarian but have an awful sweet tooth, and my husband and I do eat out quite a bit. He works out seriously (marathon training, body building), so he can eat whatever he wants and not gain. My workouts are more moderate (Zumba dance class, Pilates, yoga) so I can't eat like he does...but it's hard when he's having dessert or pizza and I want some, too! I do take healthy lunches and snacks to work, but my office workers bring in donuts and other goodies a lot, plus everyone goes to a greasy "country" restaurant for lunch on Fridays.

I'm not looking for any crash diets or anything I won't be able to stick to long-term. What I want is to work on healthy habits that will get me back to my "usual" weight and then stay there. I belong to an introPLAY team and find that logging my workouts on there is very helpful in terms of keeping track of what I actually do. My hope for Fatsecret is that logging food in a similar way will make me more mindful and able to be empowered about what kind of fuel I put in my body.
