14 September 2012

It has not been a good week. Food consumption was okay. Exercise was not. And, I have been diagnosed with PBC (primary biliary cirrhosis). I'm getting a liver biopsy this coming Friday. Right about now I could give a crap about eating healthy and exercising when every thing I do to improve seems to result in yet another stupid problem, another diagnosis, another damn pill. I've stopped taking the Letrozole (Femara) because it has been known to contribute to liver damage and the breast cancer hasn't raised its head in the last 4-1/2 years, it won't in the next six months -- and it will have to wait in line with the other issues that threaten my life. Luckily, I now crave greens and fresh food rather than processed crap so it's no problem with eating. Now to get back to more exercise now that the weather is calming down a bit.

This too will (or had darn well better!) pass.

Dammit.

Raw (whole) food lifestyle it is!

The last couple of weeks were a test of focusing on a whole food diet rather than counting calories. The food is great and I get to "play" with my food by purchasing and preparing a wider variety of foods with new food preparation tools and methods than I ever have before. Besides having a really good time learning about these new foods, the meals are delicious and more refreshing than ever. This is going to be great!

Things I learned about this week: seeds! Hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, and chia seeds! I've always wondered why we use oils in salad dressings when the liquid part doesn't blend with the oils. So, knowing that chia seeds create a sort of gel when added to water, I replaced the oil with the chia gel and made a lime juice, agave nectar, salt and pepper salad dressing. IT'S GREAT! The chia seeds gel can also replace oils in other things like baking. There's lots of information on the Internet.

New tools: a tri-blade spiral vegetable slicer! I miss spaghetti (but not the tummy ache that follows it) and discovered recipes for zuccini and squash spaghetti made using this veggie slicer. It's so cool! I sliced up some apple to freeze dry (with the blueberries already started). It's looking good so far!

New food find: Two Moms In The Raw granola! Oi vey! Very filling and more than satisfies the sweet tooth. In fact, I had some real cookies that in the past would have been a real treat but found them to fall short of the satisfaction of the Moms' granola. That's a good thing!

So, I'm going to keep on with the whole food lifestyle but now it's back to counting calories, too. And I'm slowly and awkwardly getting back to stretching and exercising so I suspect the weight will start coming down a little bit faster (but that is not a goal. Just a side effect.) It will be interesting to trace how many calories I consume with whole foods as compared to what I've been doing.

Results: Just under another pound lost. Dr. West informed me that my thyroid levels are now in the normal range (woooo-hoooooo!) and -- bonus! -- my liver levels are now in the normal range, too! (wooo-hooo! wooo-hooooo!)

Very, very excited. :)

I usually round down on the weigh in but not this time. I've been testing to see if I have a good feel for how many calories I am taking in and it turns out...I do! Turning towards a whole food diet is having a huge impact on my ability to lose weight - and feel much better and healthier! Now it's time to get back on the bike and, if the heat ever manages to spend some time in the 70s again, walk outside. I believe I will be able to start losing "whole numbers" of pounds a week when I get my exercise back up to 5 times a week with 20 minutes of stretching every day.

So, that is this coming weeks experiment! Twenty minutes (minimum, once I get going I tend to go longer) of stretching a day. At the very minimum, riding my bike for 20 mins. but I would prefer 45 minutes at least three times during the week. Getting any walks in is an added benefit!

Here we go!

Ha! It's Friday of the my test week and although I didn't lose any weight, I also did not gain any! In fact, I weigh exactly the same. This is encouraging because I am working my way into full vegetarian, whole food and some foods (like the nut milk) have more calories and more fat (but no cholesterol) and I was concerned about the effect it would have on total consumption.

So, it's back to tallying calories most especially because I am consuming different kinds of food and I really do not know how many calories they have. Like my own nut milk products. :) I discovered that I do not like the commercial almond, coconut and soy milks, yogurts or ice cream. The thickeners and sweeteners (and Wow! are they sweet!) are totally unnecessary. I learned how to make my own now and will be experimenting with a cashew, almond, hemp mix. Fun! Then on go my nut milk yogurt.

More importantly, I MUST get back to walking and stretching EVERY DAY. Yes, I'm tired by the end of the day but that's just my life and I have to push through it. And will. :)
