greg4God's Journal, 31 July 2015

After a 4 day backsliding binge of eating junk food (I mean take-out of every sort), I have been back strong on my eating plan. I was at 250 when the binge started and I had been eating to plan for around 30 days. What do you do when you are wanting to binge and/or in the middle of a binge? I quickly bounced up to 255 in weight during the binge, but today (a week later), I am down almost 7 pounds by getting my eating back on plan. Whew, I thought I would never get back to eating well again for a day or two, and those first two days back (Monday and Tuesday) were hard.

I thought I had it all figured out, then that one little cheat on Thursday, allowed me to go 4 days eating badly. The thing is in that time my body and mind felt like a drug addict trying to achieve some pleasure-filled high. Each time I ate I felt not very satisfied, and I was still looking for satisfaction. IT DID NOT COME. I felt really terrible. I was in a food coma mostly which included laying around and watching television. One night I awoke regurgitating green goo.

So here I am going into the weekend strong, but knowing the specter of those cravings are lurking nearby. I often realize this when I arrive home, and my thoughts immediately go to my 'old default' and that is grab some food and the remote and relax.

Being mentally tough is what I am learning here. I mean that I have to self-talk myself into doing the right things (and this does work). I tell myself you will so much better when you get up in the morning, and you will have lost weight. I also tell myself it will feel good to win over your weakness. I am a master of this by no means, but I am very grateful I realized I can do it. Does this fight ever stop is my question? It does seem to be getting easier. (Continued BELOW - Click the 3 Dots ---> )

I just keep anticipating that feeling of when I have reached my goal, and it is in sight now. I am still 60 to 80 pounds to my goal, but my current eating and lifestyle changes have given me more weight loss than I ever thought possible. I have lost just about 20 pounds this month. So, remembering and seeing that the goal is attainable is a great help to keep at it. I have a picture on my computer desktop of the way I want to look and I look at it regularly. I also carry a folded in-two index card in my pocket that states my goal, and I read that at least once daily.

That is how I am doing it, and I could share a lot more today. If you have any advice I would love to hear it, or support, or your stories (leave Support and Comments, if you will). If you are like me it helps to hear help and motivation. Is there anything you have gained from my story here? What advice would you give me? What are the most difficult things you face in your weight loss?

We can all be where we want to be in a year or less. You may have heard, If you can dream it you can do it, so I would add you also have to really take daily action and SEE YOURSELF as that success. Practice seeing your goal (the picture) and reading your goal (the card) ((BTW, my card has the goal, the date I will be finished, and the reason why I am going to succeed).

I would love to hear your comments, helps, angry rants, answers to my questions below.

Love,

P.S.
Friday Funny: Do you ever feel like I do that people will do the strangest things to exercise. I was on my way in to the office today and passed our local track. In the past few days on the track I have seen people do the following and I just have to laugh (please forgive me i say something about something you are doing), So here is what I have seen: people crawling on all fours down the track, people doing high leg-lifts moving BACKWARDS (as if frontwards just won't make it happen for you), people running both directions on the track, and they will crash head-on into each other if they are not careful (I mean can't we all just go the same direction), a person on the football field doing some push-up, stand-up, jump, then kick move that would intimidate anyone in a fight :), and finally a kinda sad case of a pack of young women running down the football field (which is prohibited), and one girl that could not keep up (best thing was I did not see here give up). I wanted to grab her and tell her if she is trying to lose weight, that eating right is the best way, because I have tried to exercise the weight off for 20 years and it never works. SOO, eat great today and this weekend, and go do some backwards, crawling leg-lift kicking jumps and get fit :) TGIF

You can make good snacking choices to occupy that TV time. Popcorn is a great snack-- if you are allowing carbs in your diet. I like to slice cucumbers and put them in a bowl with a little sea salt or rice wine vinegar and snack on them. Snacks are generally thought of as sweet or salty-- and as long as you are drinking plenty of water each day the salt is a better choice than the sugar. Berries make a great sweet snack-- and are lower in sugar than most other fruits. Fix up a bowl of mixed berries with a few tablespoons of Cool Whip! Shoot-- chop up a little dark chocolate and sprinkle it on top!

Thank you soo much for this tip. I have been doing this some, yet I have not been thinking CONSCIOUSLY about it. I have done things like eat grapes for a snack. Your ideas are great and interesting. The cucumbers sound good and I am interested in somethings that have some complex taste, and are healthy. Thanks again, I am going to use your advice, and consciously snack. I am going to try the salt and vinegar, b/c I used to love that on potato chips. I have heard Himalayan salt is good for some reason. MY Take Aways: - Don't go hungry, and choose healthy and tasteful snacks - Try the cucumber recipe If you have more ideas - keep them coming - You enlightened me to some things here, I really want you to know it I am going to benefit from your advice, much love.

After not being able to get a handle on anything, I finally had a great day! I eliminated all sugars and starches (especially grains). I focused on greens and high quality proteins and no snacking in between - which by the way, wasn't that difficult since there were no sugars or starches in my system to trigger cravings, plus plenty of lean protein (ie chicken and tempeh) to satisfy me. In one day I lost 5 pounds - but I had gained 3 in a day too - probably fluid retention, but I do feel leaner and this, if nothing else, shows I am on the right track - YAY!

I had my binge/out of control time this past Monday, brought on by work related stress and pressure. Usually I handle that stuff pretty good but not Monday. Once in that mode it's hard to get out but I was at work and after eating all my stashed junk foods I had no choice but to stop, by evening I was back under control. For me it is a mental thing. With the correct frame of mind I've learned to be able to handle some snacks around and allow an occasional indulgence, BUT also realize the out of control compulsive eating problem is there lurking and if I'm not careful it'll take hold of me again in such times. Something that has made a big difference for me at this point is accepting and embracing that what I'm doing is not temporary. I have a current weight goal but once I get there I'm not done, my path just takes a somewhat different course. This is now a way of life and I've become enthusiastic about it and even enjoy it. I'm happier, healthier, have a better and highly positive outlook/attitude most days. I am enjoying the journey and it's a good way to live. Good job Greg with your loss both with this weigh in and in the past several weeks, and breaking out of binge mode and getting back to plan.

Robinadobin - congratulations on that great day. Losing 5 pounds in a day is incredible. I think my best may be near 3 pounds. I don't doubt that it happens. I would say stick with what works for you. It sounds like you may have been in what they call Ketosis (search for this on the Internet or Youtube). Ketosis can cause weight loss from getting your body in the Ketatonic state. Many people use this method for losing weight. You can find more information if you research the Bulletproof Executive, and he started Bulletproof coffee. He is one of a few good Ketosis experts. Thanks for sharing. much love.

I so agree with the lifelong attitude. What worked for me yesterday was saying to myself - just do it for an hour and see what happens.

Jmb... - We so relate on the mental aspects, the problem of out of control eating lurking, and knowing the path is not done when we reach our goal. I am soo happy I have learned some things about the getting Mentally Tough, Visualizing myself at my goal, and positive self talk. Those little wins where I do not eat that last 9 or 10 PM snack and I wake up down a half pound or so less has made me learn it works. Yes I am trying to consciously pick up on the triggers (like when I get home, and I mean the food starts calling my name as soon as I close my car door at home - and even with some TV shows (Sienfeld, et al). So I am going to try to pick up on my triggers and use some healthy tasty snacks like Nyagos_Friend suggested. And the goal is not done, I agree, when I meet my first goal, 180 for now, I am going for being the leanest I have ever been to about 165. At this time, my goal index card I carry has me with the energy to take on goals in my life to be more succesful in other areas. I believe, and believing and faith are keys, I will make it; because I am losing faster, and feel better than I have in years. As we approach our goal, we should start seeing other successes in life. And my friends I would tell you that if you are starving yourself and don't feel good on the way. There is a better way. I don't ahave space to share it here. If your interested go to http://www.wisermindandbody.com , and I will give the best plan I know. Thanks Jmb.. and much love and success to you and yours!

JMB - yes and along the same lines: Another quick tip - A person I know said this, 'When you are about to binge: you are 15 minutes from fighting off that urge, so fight it off' and I would add get some healthy snack and drink a bottle or two of water or 50/50 juice and water and fill up so our body will fight along with our mind, b/c it will not be so hungry. REMEMBER, fight off the craving within 15 minutes with POSITVE Self talk (me and JMB agree), get some low cal healthy food and water, and remember your goal (see your goals). amen JMB
