Weight loss / calorie tracking is a funny old game. For six of the past seven days, I have exceeded RDI (Range 101%-149%). I blames the dreaded alcohol. It gives me perverse pleasure putting out the recycling as the neighbours will be tutting at its contents and secretly blaming me hubby. Shielded by anonymity, I can put me hand up and admit guilt. Pleasantly surprised continued weight loss, courtesy of the Iron(wo)man Challenge.

It's a question that is asked a lot… Why or how?

Resorting to a bit of simple math using the net calorie count, worked out that over this week I have a net calorie deficit of 884. If it takes 7,700 calories to lose a kg, I can realistically expect to lose around 115 gms from last weeks blowout.

If I factor in, food nutritional variations i.e. I use standard values, or near enough food equivalents and to be fair I will select a higher value … there may be some overestimation. Also, I only record a limited range of activity rather than everything that I do in a day, thus giving room for underestimation. There's also scales, water retention, hormones … the list goes on.

Every one is different but in my case it's a factor of about 2%. I can live with that.

Finally, I am grateful for FS giving me the tools to be brutally honest with I shove in me gob! It's not pretty reading but it's there in black and white. Conclusion: not ready to go cold turkey …

I've found this an exercise in honesty and quite liberating in some ways. Although I haven't recorded every day I generally record everything on the days that I do. It doesn't make nice reading to see that I've tanned a bottle of wine on my own so it's an eye-opener in its own right. I get to weigh in on Friday and I'm getting nervous after 6 weeks away from the scales. I've been exercising and clothes are starting to be loose so I'm mildly optimistic. Knowing that I feel better, will I be disappointed if I haven't lost much? Probably - which just goes to show how irrational we can be!

Got to agree with you. The honesty is scary but has helped explain my 'maintenance' weight over the past 10 or so years. Sounds as though your weight loss marker (lose clothing) is a better indication of how well you are doing. Good luck with your weigh-in. Keep that chin up!
